Overview

Shiksha is a higher-education discovery service for colleges, courses and exams in India and abroad. It is best suited to students weighing multiple institutions or admission paths. Its breadth of search and comparison tools is useful, but consider its contact-information sharing before signaling interest in a college.

Shiksha.com belongs to Info Edge (India) Ltd. and launched in 2008; the company is headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. Shiksha says its information is aggregated from official college, exam-body and ranking-body websites, and that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by a government organization. Its catalog figures vary: one description gives more than 60,000 institutions and 375,000 courses, while another gives 50,000+ institutions, 400,000+ courses and 800+ exams across its website and app.

Key features

College search and comparison

Students can explore colleges and courses, compare options side by side, and review information on fees, admission criteria, eligibility, accepted exams, placements, rankings, reviews and scholarships. College reviews and MyShortlist can help organize a search; the breadth is particularly useful when assembling an initial shortlist rather than relying on one profile in isolation.

Exam and admissions guidance

The app provides question papers, syllabi and important dates for 600+ exams. College and rank predictors use exam scores and historical cutoff trends to estimate possible options or ranks, while Shiksha Assistant counselling recommends colleges using exam scores, budget, location, profile and preferences. These tools give students several ways to narrow choices, but their estimates are not a substitute for checking admission requirements directly.

Student community and alumni data

Ask and Answer and student reviews add peer perspectives to institutional profiles. Shiksha also says its Alumni Employment Statistics includes salary data powered by Naukri.com. Together, these features provide context beyond admissions and fees, though students should weigh them alongside their own priorities.

Privacy and support

Shiksha says it uses physical, electronic and procedural safeguards and seeks compliance with India's Information Technology Act, 2000 and its rules. Its privacy policy says users may request access, correction, erasure, restricted processing, data portability or withdrawal of consent. However, Shiksha may share contact information with colleges or educational institutions when a user expresses interest or is shortlisted as a potential admission candidate. The platform also uses YouTube API services and may track video play, pause and mute actions.

The Android app listing says the app may share app activity and collect location; it also says data is encrypted in transit and users can request deletion. Shiksha's contact page says experts aim to answer questions within 24 hours, and the Android app gives appfeedback@shiksha.com for support.

Pricing

Shiksha uses a freemium model. The Shiksha plan is free, and the service is also described as a free app. Students looking for college discovery, comparisons and exam resources can start without paying; no paid plan pricing is stated, so paid options, if considered, are custom pricing.

Platforms

Shiksha runs on web, Android and iOS. The apps bring search, comparisons, student reviews, exam information, alerts and personalized recommendations to mobile, making it practical to continue a college search away from a computer.

Who it's for

Shiksha is a strong fit for students researching higher education in India or abroad who want college profiles, exam resources and shortlist tools in one service. Its predictors and counselling recommendations can help students begin narrowing options around scores, budget and location. It is a less comfortable choice for anyone who does not want contact details shared with institutions after expressing interest.

Pros and cons

Pro: College profiles combine admissions, fees, placements, rankings, reviews, scholarships and accepted exams, giving students several decision points in one search.
Pro: Exam resources, cutoff-based predictors and preference-based counselling support different stages of application planning.
Pro: Web, Android and iOS access makes the search and comparison tools available across devices.
Con: Contact information may be shared with colleges when a student expresses interest or is shortlisted, which may not suit privacy-conscious users.
Con: The Android app may share app activity and collect location, so its data practices deserve attention before use.

Alternatives

For a free service limited to UK universities, Whatuni is the more focused choice. Collegedunia is worth considering for a free plan that includes exam alerts, mock tests and college comparison. Choose CollegeData for free college planning, noting that some tools require an account, or CollegeDekho for personalised expert counselling.

Mastersportal is a free web option for searching and comparing Master's programmes, scholarships, tuition fees and study destinations. Uni Compare, educations.com and Careers360 are other alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose Shiksha if you want a broad college and exam discovery service with comparison, shortlist, predictor and counselling tools across web and mobile. Its strongest case is the range of decision-support features around one search; its main drawback is that expressing interest can lead to contact details being shared with institutions. Students who are comfortable with that trade-off have a useful starting point for planning, while those who are not should look elsewhere.
