Overview

Voxel Builder is a free voxel-based 3D modeling application for people who want to create block-based scenes or turn existing assets into voxels. Its mix of modeling, rendering and conversion tools makes it useful beyond basic scene editing, while dense projects call for care with performance and storage.

Key features

Modeling and conversion

Terrain, cube, sphere and isometric generators offer several starting points; interactive modeling, symmetric drawing and painting, voxel transforms and color groups provide ways to shape and organize the result. Texture painting is supported, but animation tools are not, so it is not a fit for workflows that depend on animating scenes inside the app.

Voxelization handles GLB, OBJ, STL and PLY models, as well as images and Unicode or emoji text. This range makes it practical to bring varied source material into a voxel workflow. GLB geometry animations are unsupported, and when mesh merging errors occur, the project recommends merging meshes with matching properties before export.

Rendering and handoff

A Three.js sandbox, GPU path tracer, basic PBR rendering and post-process effects give users several ways to present a scene. Dense scenes can raise GPU load, however, and the project reports lower frame rates at higher voxel volumes; Electron is recommended when working with many voxels.

Projects save and load as JSON or MagicaVoxel VOX files, with local storage, snapshots, quicksave, undo and redo, and ZIP snapshot backups for sharing. Export options include GLB, GLTF, OBJ, STL and PLY. A Blender importer script is included, and baked GLB meshes can be used with Blender and other 3D software, making the app a useful part of a broader modeling workflow.

Privacy and license

The project describes Voxel Builder as ad-free, with no trackers or logging, and releases its code under GPL-3.0. It is designed for online or offline use.

Pricing

Voxel Builder is free, with a free plan and no paid tier described. That removes a purchase decision for individuals exploring voxel modeling, but browser storage remains limited; Electron is the better choice when projects need more capacity. The project provides Electron downloads for Linux x64 and Windows x64.

Platforms

Voxel Builder runs in Chrome and Firefox on desktop and mobile, and is PWA add-to-home-screen ready. Electron downloads are provided for Windows x64 and Linux x64. Mobile access broadens where it can be used, but the project recommends a tablet with a pen or a Wacom tablet for the best experience, making a phone a less suitable primary workspace.

Who it's for

Voxel Builder suits artists and makers who want a free tool for creating voxel scenes, converting models or images, and rendering or exporting results for other 3D software. It is a stronger fit for users with a tablet and pen or a desktop setup than for those expecting high frame rates on dense scenes, generous browser storage, or built-in animation tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad model voxelization and export support make it useful for moving assets into and out of a voxel workflow.
Pros: Multiple rendering options, snapshots and Blender handoff support creation through presentation and onward use.
Pros: Free, offline-capable use and the project's stated no-tracker, no-logging approach lower cost and privacy concerns.
Cons: High voxel volumes can reduce frame rates and increase GPU load, which limits comfort with dense scenes.
Cons: Browser storage is limited, so larger projects are better handled in Electron.
Cons: GLB geometry animation is unsupported, and there are no animation tools.

Alternatives

Voxel Editors is a directory of voxel-editing options for readers comparing the category.

Choose Goxel if you want a free editor with desktop availability across Linux, macOS and Windows, plus Android and iOS; its desktop scene size is described as unlimited.

Crocotile 3D is another option, with a free trial and a registration code priced at 29.99 USD per month.

Vengi VoxEdit is free and open source, and is available on Linux, macOS, Windows and the web; it is still under development.

Mega Voxels offers a free app on Android and iOS, with optional paid premium content.

Blockhammer is a free voxel editor for Linux, macOS and Windows, offered in early access.

Facet may suit browser users who want a free demo that saves and reloads JSON projects; its full version adds one-click OBJ export and costs 10.00 USD once.

pixemboss is a free in-browser editor that requires no installation or account to start.

Roxel is a free, name-your-own-price option for macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Voxel Builder if you want a free voxel workspace that combines modeling, conversion, rendering and practical exports, especially when Blender or other 3D software is part of your workflow. Look elsewhere if your projects need built-in animation, sustained performance with dense scenes, or more browser storage than the app provides.
