Overview

Cucumber supports Behaviour-Driven Development by checking software against executable specifications. Teams write those specifications in Gherkin and keep them as .feature text files, typically alongside the software in source control. Step definitions connect each Gherkin step to code that performs it, so nontechnical participants can read the scenarios without the test suite becoming code-free.

Founded in 2008, Cucumber has returned to community ownership. The open-source project is funded through donations and other listed sponsors, and directs users to documentation, books, Cucumber School, and community channels for learning and support. A security policy provides a route for reporting security issues.

Key features

Gherkin and implementation choices

Gherkin’s language flavours let teams use keywords in their own spoken language, which can help keep specifications accessible across teams. Official implementations include JavaScript, Java, Ruby, Android Java, Kotlin, Scala, and C++; semi-official and unofficial implementations broaden the choices further. That range is useful for teams working across different stacks, though each still needs step definitions in its implementation language.

Execution and reporting

Cucumber runs locally, supports parallel execution, browser testing, and API access, and can run in continuous integration environments. Built-in formatters produce HTML, JSON, JUnit, and progress output, with custom formatters available. JUnit output and a Jenkins reporting plugin provide a route into CI reporting, making Cucumber a practical fit for teams that want acceptance tests in an existing build workflow.

Hosted Cucumber Reports need more care than local output: published reports use public URLs without authentication and are deleted automatically after 24 hours. Publishing is anonymous, data is stored in US data centers, and it is encrypted at rest. Teams handling sensitive test results should weigh public access against the short retention window before publishing.

Pricing

Cucumber Open is free. The plan is an open-source project and includes free Cucumber Reports; there is no paid tier described to unlock framework features. That makes it a straightforward choice for teams able to run and maintain the framework themselves. The main qualification is not a price cap but the hosted reporting terms: public report URLs and 24-hour deletion may not suit every workflow.

Platforms

Cucumber Open is listed for Android, API, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Official implementations span multiple programming ecosystems, while local execution and CI support let teams fit it into development and test pipelines across those environments.

Who it's for

Cucumber Open is best for teams that want acceptance criteria readable in Gherkin, stored with source code, and tied to executable checks. It is less suitable for teams seeking a visual authoring environment or those that need hosted reports to remain private behind authentication. The framework's community channels and learning resources are a better match for teams comfortable adopting an open-source tool than buyers seeking a paid, bundled support plan.

Pros and cons

Readable, shareable specifications: Gherkin files can sit with the software in source control and use language-specific keywords.
Broad execution and reporting options: Multiple implementations, parallel execution, browser and API support, and standard CI-friendly formats accommodate varied workflows.
No paid framework tier: The open-source plan is free, with free Cucumber Reports.
Code remains necessary: Step definitions must connect the scenarios to executable programming logic.
Hosted reports are public: Anyone with the report URL can access published output, and it is removed after 24 hours.

Alternatives

BDD Testing Tools is a useful starting point for comparing the category. Choose Serenity BDD if a free open-source library with platforms including iOS and web is a closer fit; its JUnit 4 support is deprecated and planned for removal in Serenity 6.0.0. Choose CukeTest if visual feature editing and JavaScript or Python support matter more; its free Lite plan includes 500 automation API calls and limits some built-in automation libraries.

FitNesse is another free open-source option, with API and self-hosted platforms and no commercial plans or limits stated. Ginkgo is a free Go testing framework whose current supported major version is v2. BddDotNet offers free MIT-licensed software. Concordion is a free Java library under Apache License 2.0. Consider Karate if API testing across REST, GraphQL, and SOAP, or browser and desktop UI automation, is a priority. Reqnroll offers a free Community plan with Visual Studio and Rider integration, community plugins, and support.

Verdict

Choose Cucumber Open if your team wants executable acceptance tests anchored to readable, source-controlled Gherkin specifications and can maintain the code that connects scenarios to behavior. Its broad implementation and reporting choices make that workflow adaptable without a framework subscription. Look elsewhere if public hosted reports are unacceptable or visual test authoring is central to your needs.
