In their own words
Cucumber Open
Cucumber Open runs automated acceptance tests from specifications written in plain language, helping teams check whether software behaves as described. It supports Behaviour-Driven Development by executing Gherkin specifications saved in `.feature` text files, typically alongside software in source control. Step definitions link the specification's steps to code that carries them out. Official implementations include JavaScript, Java, Ruby, Android Java, Kotlin, Scala, and C++, with semi-official and unofficial implementations also listed. Gherkin has variations for spoken languages, so teams can use keywords in their own language. Reporting options include built-in HTML, JSON, JUnit, and progress formatters, as well as custom formatters. Cucumber can run in continuous integration environments; its documentation describes JUnit output and a Jenkins reporting plugin. The project is free and open source, with local execution, parallel execution, browser testing, and API access. Published Cucumber Reports are public without authentication and deleted after 24 hours; the report service says data is stored in US data centers and encrypted at rest.
Reqnroll
Reqnroll is an open-source.NET framework for turning behavior specifications into automated tests. Teams write executable scenarios in Gherkin’s Given-When-Then format to check whether software meets stated requirements. It supports full Gherkin, including tagged Rule blocks, and step definitions written with regular expressions or Cucumber Expressions; asynchronous steps and hooks are supported. Scenarios can run with NUnit, MsTest, TUnit, or xUnit, including xUnit v3. Reqnroll runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and documents.NET Framework 4.6.2 and newer listed versions through.NET 10.0; frameworks before.NET 8 are outside Microsoft support. It is distributed as NuGet packages and documents integrations for Visual Studio, Rider, and Visual Studio Code, though an IDE is not required. The Visual Studio extension adds Gherkin editing tools, navigation, and code snippet generation. Reqnroll is based on the SpecFlow codebase, is compatible with SpecFlow, and has a migration guide. Community use is free; Professional is billed at €400 per 10 users per year, excluding VAT.
