Overview

Proton VPN combines encrypted connections with a network it advertises as 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries. It supports streaming and torrenting, and includes a kill switch and WireGuard compatibility. The free plan removes data limits, artificial speed limits, and ads, but restricts use to one device at a time and randomly selected servers in 10 countries.

The paid tiers expand simultaneous connections to 10 devices. Proton Unlimited also bundles all premium Proton products and includes 500 GB of storage, so its appeal depends on whether that broader bundle is useful beyond VPN access.

Key features

Privacy and encryption

Connections use AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption with WireGuard or OpenVPN. Proton describes the service as no-logs and open-source, and says it has undergone an independent no-logs audit. Those are meaningful privacy assurances for users comparing VPN providers; the kill switch adds a safeguard for users concerned about a connection dropping.

Network, speed, and filtering

The advertised 20,000+ servers across 140+ countries give paid users a wide geographic range to choose from. VPN Accelerator is said to increase speeds by up to 400%, but that ceiling is not a guarantee of a particular result. NetShield uses DNS filtering to block ads, trackers, phishing scams, malicious sites, and malware, adding protection beyond traffic encryption.

Streaming and torrenting

Streaming and torrent support make the service relevant to users who want a VPN for media access or file sharing, rather than privacy alone. The free plan’s randomly selected servers and single-device allowance are restrictive for those uses; the 10-device paid allowance is more practical for frequent use across devices.

Pricing

Proton Free

Proton Free costs 0.00 USD per free, requires no credit card, and has unlimited data with no artificial speed limits or ads. It allows one device at a time and randomly selected servers in 10 countries. This is a strong starting point for one person who can live with limited server choice; it is not the plan for simultaneous household connections.

VPN Plus

VPN Plus is shown at 0.00 USD per month, billed at $0.00 for the first month and renewing at $0.00 every month. It includes a 30-day money-back guarantee and supports 10 devices, with access to 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries. Those terms make it the more suitable tier for users who need broad server choice and several concurrent connections. Subscriptions can be canceled at any time, and payments can be refunded in full within 30 days.

Proton Unlimited

Proton Unlimited is also shown at 0.00 USD per month, with $0.00 for the first month and $0.00 on each monthly renewal. It supports 10 VPN devices, includes all premium Proton products, and lists 500 GB of storage. Choose it over VPN Plus when the wider Proton bundle matters; for VPN access alone, the extra bundle is not a clear advantage.

Payment methods include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, and Proton credits. VPN Plus includes priority support, alongside help, contact, and live chat channels.

Platforms

Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chromebook, Android TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV, with browser support as well. That range suits users who want to cover both computers and mobile or television devices; the free plan’s one-device-at-a-time limit still applies regardless of platform.

Who it's for

Proton VPN is a good fit for privacy-minded users who want an uncapped free plan, a broad choice of supported platforms, or a paid tier with 10 simultaneous devices. Its audited no-logs positioning, open-source software, and encryption options will matter most to readers weighing privacy claims. Users who need multiple active devices or dependable choice among server locations should look beyond Free.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free tier has unlimited data, no artificial speed limits, and no ads, so it can serve ongoing use rather than just a short trial.
Pro: Paid plans support 10 simultaneous devices and a network advertised across 140+ countries, suiting multi-device users who value server choice.
Pro: AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption, WireGuard or OpenVPN, open-source software, and an independent no-logs audit make the privacy posture more substantial than a bare VPN connection.
Pro: Streaming, torrenting, NetShield, and a kill switch cover several common reasons to use a VPN.
Con: Free users get one device at a time and randomly selected servers in 10 countries, limiting flexibility.
Con: VPN Accelerator’s “up to 400%” speed increase is a maximum claim, not a stated expected result.

Verdict

Choose Proton VPN if you want an uncapped free VPN, or need a privacy-oriented service with wide platform support and 10-device paid plans. Its free tier is unusually usable for one device, while random server selection and the one-device cap are the reasons to look elsewhere if flexibility or concurrent use matters most.
