Overview

CurseForge is a Minecraft mod and modpack catalog from Overwolf, with more than 10,000 projects to browse. It is best suited to players assembling or sharing Minecraft setups across supported loaders. The free catalog does the core job; Premium is a convenience upgrade for people who want fewer interruptions and faster downloads.

Founded in 2010 and based in Ramat Gan, Israel, CurseForge describes its Minecraft mods as completely free. Its catalog includes game-version filters and project dependency information, useful aids when narrowing choices, though they do not guarantee that a combination will work in every setup.

Key features

The browse page covers Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with game-version filters and dependency information. The catalog also supports download tracking and mod collections, helping users keep tabs on projects and group selections. Built-in publishing, server tools and API access extend its use beyond finding individual mods.

Modpacks can be exported as a CurseForge .zip or shared by profile code. That is useful when a group wants to pass around a setup rather than assemble it one project at a time; players looking for a single mod may have little need for those organization and sharing tools.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client, provides direct downloads without waiting delays, and adds custom themes and layout customization to desktop access. Those benefits target frequent users; they do not unlock the free mods themselves.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income, and cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a stated creator-support component alongside its convenience features.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access. It is the sensible starting point for players who can tolerate ads and download delays and do not need Premium desktop customization.

The Monthly Subscription costs 2.99 USD per month, billed monthly at $2.99, and can be cancelled anytime. It includes an ad-free experience, instant downloads, and Premium web and desktop access. Choose it for a short-term need or to avoid an annual commitment.

The Annual Subscription costs 2.50 USD per year, billed annually at $30.00 (listed from $35.88), with a 16% saving advertised and cancellation anytime. The lower monthly equivalent suits users who expect to keep Premium; it commits them to annual billing rather than the monthly plan's shorter term. The separately named Premium Monthly and Premium Annual plans have no stated prices, so custom pricing applies.

Subscribers retain access through the end of their billing cycle after cancelling, then revert to free membership. Refunds are generally not offered, though exceptions are considered individually. Tebex handles subscription payments.

Platforms

The catalog is available on the web. Premium also includes desktop access, which runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The supported loader list—Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt—gives players several Minecraft mod ecosystems to browse, while listed game-version filters span releases from 1.14 through 1.21.5.

Who it's for

CurseForge fits Minecraft players who want one catalog for discovering mods and modpacks, checking dependencies, and organizing or sharing collections. It is particularly useful for players working across the supported loaders or coordinating a modpack with others. Casual users who only need occasional downloads can stay on the free plan; frequent users who value ad removal, direct downloads or desktop customization have a clearer case for Premium.

It is less compelling for someone who wants an entirely ad-free experience without a subscription, or who only needs a specific mod and has no use for the catalog's collection and modpack tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access to Minecraft mods and modpacks keeps the core catalog open without a subscription.
Pros: More than 10,000 projects, four supported loaders and game-version filters make the catalog broad and easier to narrow.
Pros: Dependency information, collections, profile-code sharing and .zip export support practical setup work beyond browsing.
Pros: Premium combines ad removal and direct downloads with desktop themes and layout customization.
Cons: Ads and download waiting delays remain on the free tier, so regular users may find its convenience limits noticeable.
Cons: Annual billing requires $30.00 upfront, and refunds are generally unavailable.

Alternatives

For a focused waypoint or map tool rather than a broad catalog, consider EzWaypoints, a free client-side Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.8–1.21.11, or MapWriter Mini Map MITE, a free MIT-licensed port for Minecraft 1.6.4-MITE. Waypointer is another free open-source Fabric option, but its current version requires Fabric Loader, Fabric API, Hypixel Mod API and Java 25+.

wWaypoints, Antique Atlas 4, Command Waypoints and Minimap CE are free alternatives. Xaero's Minimap is free, with optional Patreon support at 1.00 USD per month for sneak-peeks, auto updates and early access. For other discovery and management options, browse Game Mod Managers, Minecraft Mod Browsers, Game Mod Repositories, Minecraft Modpack Builders, Minecraft Minimap Mods or Minecraft Schematic Tools.

Verdict

CurseForge is a strong choice for Minecraft players who want a free, broad catalog plus tools to organize and share modpacks. Premium makes sense for regular users who will use ad-free access, direct downloads or desktop customization; players who only need occasional mods can stay free, while those seeking a single-purpose map or waypoint tool should choose a focused alternative.
