Overview

Cyberduck is a file browser for servers and cloud storage on Mac and Windows, best suited to people who move files among different protocols and services. Its broad connectivity, synchronization preview and open-source license make it a flexible general-purpose client, though it is less suitable when scheduled transfers or consistent modification-date retention are essential.

Key features

Connections and transfers

Cyberduck handles FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and SMB alongside cloud and object-storage services including Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Backblaze B2, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Box and Dropbox. This breadth is useful when work spans several providers; a reader who needs only one protocol may not benefit as much from the range. Drag-and-drop, recursive directory transfers and resumable transfers cover common file-moving needs, and files can be copied directly between servers. Transfer automation is supported, but scheduled transfers are not, so it is a poor fit for jobs that must run on a timetable without intervention.

Synchronization, editing and sharing

Cyberduck synchronizes local and remote directories and previews affected files before applying changes. That preview gives users a chance to review the scope of a sync, but modification dates cannot be retained for every protocol, a meaningful drawback where timestamps matter. Server files can be edited with a preferred external editor. The client can copy or open HTTP URLs, with CDN and pre-signed URL support for S3.

Security and integration

Cryptomator integration adds client-side encryption, including encrypted filenames, obfuscated directory structures and individually encrypted files. SFTP supports strong ciphers, public-key authentication and two-factor authentication. Passwords are stored in the system Keychain, and certificate validation follows Keychain trust settings. Cyberduck also integrates with Finder, Windows notifications, Bonjour discovery and system protocol handlers. Its maker says the software has no backdoors and requires no account or registration; the GPL-licensed source code is available on GitHub. Support comes through community help, documentation, a public bug tracker and email. Cyberduck CLI is also available for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Pricing

The GPL-licensed Free software plan costs 0.00 USD per free and requires no registration or account. It is the straightforward choice for users comfortable with the donation prompt. The Registration key is 10.00 USD per month (billed Minimum contribution shown by the vendor); it disables that prompt and provides a personal key usable on multiple computers. The one-time Registration key contribution costs 10.00 USD per once (billed minimum amount 10 USD), also disables the prompt and is usable on multiple computers, but the personal key is not shareable. These paid options change the donation experience rather than describe different feature sets; choose recurring or one-time support according to preference.

Platforms

Cyberduck runs on macOS and Windows. Current downloads require Windows 10 64-bit or later, or macOS 10.13 or later on Intel or Apple M1. The separate Cyberduck CLI is available for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Who it's for

Cyberduck is a strong fit for people who want one desktop client for traditional file-transfer protocols and multiple cloud or storage services, especially those who value sync previews, server-to-server copying, or client-side encryption through Cryptomator. Its open-source license and account-free free plan also suit readers who want to use GPL software without signing up. Look elsewhere if scheduled transfers are central to the workflow or if every protocol must preserve modification dates.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad protocol and cloud-service coverage reduces the need for separate clients.
Pros: Resumable transfers, recursive directory operations and direct server-to-server copying support substantial transfer workflows.
Pros: Sync previews, Cryptomator integration and SFTP authentication options provide useful safeguards before and during file handling.
Cons: Scheduled transfers are not supported, limiting unattended recurring jobs.
Cons: Modification dates are not retained by all protocols, which can disrupt timestamp-dependent processes.
Cons: Desktop support is limited to Windows and macOS, despite CLI availability for Linux.

Alternatives

FileZilla Client is a reasonable alternative for a free client focused on FTP, FTPS and SFTP, with Linux support as well as macOS and Windows. FTP Rush is another free option when support across mobile platforms matters alongside desktop systems. CrossFTP is an alternative with a free client and separate Pro and Enterprise plans. WinSCP suits Windows-only users who want a free open-source client for SFTP, FTP, FTPS, SCP, WebDAV and S3. lftp is a free GPL-licensed option for Linux users. Core FTP offers a free plan and paid single-user licenses for Windows. FTP Commander is an alternative for Android or Windows users seeking basic FTP transfers and command-line mode. FTPShell Client is a Windows alternative with a personal edition free for non-commercial use and a paid Pro edition.

For more options, browse FTP and SFTP clients, WebDAV Client Software or SFTP Client Software.

Verdict

Choose Cyberduck if you need one open-source desktop client to connect to a varied mix of servers and cloud services, with synchronization previews and flexible transfer tools. Its free GPL plan is capable without an account, while the paid keys simply remove the donation prompt. Choose another client if scheduled automation, Linux desktop support, or reliable modification-date retention across every protocol is a requirement.
