Overview

GW2Skills combines build planning with reference material on skills and traits, grouped by profession. Players can configure a build and pass it along as a QuickLink or load one from a chat link, a practical way to exchange and revisit setups without recreating them.

The site dates its development to 2012 and credits Connor McLeoud. It offers English, Russian, German and French versions. Its database is updated with current in-game skill balance; the latest update cited for that data is the July 14, 2026 balance. The project says it uses the official Guild Wars 2 API only for text strings, which reflects its view that the official data is insufficient or incomplete for its purposes.

Key features

Build editor: Configure profession, race, weapons, environment, skills, traits, equipment, effects and combo options. The breadth makes it useful for planning a character in one place, rather than only browsing skill descriptions.
Sharing and loading: Generate a QuickLink for a build or load a setup from its chat link. This supports sharing builds between players and returning to a setup later.
Profession-organized reference: Browse skills and traits by profession, with material on races, effects, combo fields and finishers. That organization is useful when checking a specific character's options.
Calculation baseline: Conditional trait modifiers assume both user and target have 100% health, neither has negative conditions, and only selected temporary effects apply. That makes the assumptions clear, but comparisons can diverge from a real encounter with different conditions.

The site has its own API for obtaining build QuickLinks, but project use is restricted by IP address: a permanent dedicated IP is required, and the site asks prospective users to contact it first. That is a meaningful barrier for hobby integrations without fixed infrastructure.

Pricing

Free — free. The website and build editor are freely available, with donations supporting the project. There is no free trial because the service is free. This suits players who want planning and reference tools without a subscription; the tradeoff is that the project relies substantially on donations to sustain an ad-free site.

Platforms

GW2Skills runs on the web and offers API access for projects that meet its IP requirements. The FAQ says the team does not plan to create a mobile application, so players seeking a dedicated phone app should choose another tool. The site accepts donations and provides info@gw2skills.net for contact.

Who it's for

GW2Skills is a strong fit for Guild Wars 2 players who want a no-cost browser build planner, a profession-based reference, and links they can share or reopen. It is less suitable for users who need mobile-app access, precise encounter-specific trait calculations, or API integration without a permanent dedicated IP.

Pros and cons

Pros

Build configuration covers professions, equipment, effects and combos, giving planners more than a skills-only lookup.
QuickLinks and chat-link loading make builds straightforward to share and revisit.
Profession-based reference content is available in four languages, and the site is supported by donations rather than advertising.
Free access includes the website and editor, with no subscription cost.

Cons

No mobile application is planned, limiting use for players who want a dedicated phone app.
Conditional trait calculations rely on a full-health, no-negative-conditions baseline and selected temporary effects, which may not match a given encounter.
Project API access requires a permanent dedicated IP and prior contact, making it a poor fit for casual or dynamically hosted integrations.

Alternatives

Game Build Planners is the broader directory for readers comparing tools across the category.

D4Planner is a free option for readers who want a planner across Android, iOS and web rather than a Guild Wars 2-focused site.
Dark & Builder is a freemium alternative with Android, iOS and web support.
PoB Redux is a free desktop app for Linux, macOS and Windows, a better platform match for desktop users who do not need a web planner.
TLI Builder offers browser access and a Windows desktop app; its application source is MIT-licensed, while game data has separate licensing terms.
Arrow to the Build is a free, open-source option for Windows 10/11 users.
Last Epoch Building is a free web and Windows alternative built by a one-person maker in their own time.
Last Epoch Planner is an open-source project for Linux, web and Windows.
Last Epoch Tools is a free web option for fan-site tools and content.

Verdict

Choose GW2Skills if you play Guild Wars 2 and want a free browser editor that can configure, share and reopen detailed builds alongside profession-organized reference material. Look elsewhere if mobile access is essential, encounter-specific calculations are a priority, or your project cannot meet the dedicated-IP requirement for API access.
