In their own words
DataChain
DataChain is a Python library and context layer for organizing unstructured data for researchers and AI agents. It converts files from Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, local filesystems, and Hugging Face into typed, versioned datasets that can be queried. Its Dataset DB uses Pydantic schemas, versioning, and file references, while the Knowledge Base stores summaries, statistics, lineage, and code. Parallel Python pipelines can run locally or across distributed workers with asynchronous I/O and automatic checkpoints. An agent harness connects Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex through a local skill or Studio MCP. DataChain Studio adds job tracking, dataset management, experiment tracking, a model registry, team collaboration, a REST API, and GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket connections. Compute can run in a customer VPC, and on-premises deployment, role-based access, audit logs, and SSO/SAML are supported. The Open Source plan is free for one developer using local compute and millions of records. Teams costs what you agree with the maker and supports up to five users; Enterprise pricing is custom.
Dolt
Dolt is a SQL database for managing data with version-control operations. Users can fork, clone, branch, merge, push and pull databases, then inspect commits, compare diffs, resolve SQL conflicts and revert commits. It can be connected to like a MySQL database or deployed as a versioned MySQL replica. DoltHub hosts public data and provides a web interface for editing and pull-request review; databases are public by default, with private databases available to Pro users or organizations. DoltLab is a self-hosted option for running DoltHub on a private network or development machine. Connector libraries include JDBC, Perl DBI, MySQL Connector/Python and Go sqlx/database/sql; listed framework integrations include Django, SQLAlchemy, Prisma, Laravel, Hibernate, GORM, Rails and FastAPI. Hosted Dolt includes a web SQL workbench, nightly full backups retained for 14 days, and AWS and GCP private networking. Dolt is free and open source. DoltHub Pro is $5 a month; a Hosted Dolt trial instance is $50 a month.
