In their own words

DataChain

DataChain is a Python library and context layer for organizing unstructured data for researchers and AI agents. It converts files from Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, local filesystems, and Hugging Face into typed, versioned datasets that can be queried. Its Dataset DB uses Pydantic schemas, versioning, and file references, while the Knowledge Base stores summaries, statistics, lineage, and code. Parallel Python pipelines can run locally or across distributed workers with asynchronous I/O and automatic checkpoints. An agent harness connects Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex through a local skill or Studio MCP. DataChain Studio adds job tracking, dataset management, experiment tracking, a model registry, team collaboration, a REST API, and GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket connections. Compute can run in a customer VPC, and on-premises deployment, role-based access, audit logs, and SSO/SAML are supported. The Open Source plan is free for one developer using local compute and millions of records. Teams costs what you agree with the maker and supports up to five users; Enterprise pricing is custom.

git-annex

git-annex manages large files alongside Git while keeping file contents outside Git itself. Git tracks filenames and metadata, while git-annex stores contents in a distributed store across repository clones. It can synchronize, back up, and archive data online or offline, and it can resume interrupted transfers. The assistant can create a synchronized folder spanning computers, Android devices, removable drives, NAS appliances, and cloud services. Built-in special remotes include S3, Glacier, rclone, rsync, web, WebDAV, and Android adb. Encrypted remotes can protect file contents and use HMAC hashing for filenames, though the project says encryption is mostly not enabled by default. The project describes git-annex as intended for Git users who like command-line work. File size is limited by the filesystem; repositories with hundreds of thousands of files are supported, while larger repositories may slow down due to Git limitations. It is free software, with installation methods listed for Linux distributions, macOS, Android, and Windows. The project explicitly says it is not a backup system, though it can contribute to archival or backup workflows.
