| Purpose | DataVeil permanently masks sensitive data in SQL databases with realistic fictitious values for use in environments such as testing, development, training, analytics and support. | Jailer creates small, referentially intact database slices and lets users browse data through table relationships. |
| Support | Team licensing includes technical support and software updates; support is delivered through tickets, email and internet voice or video communication. | The project directs users to GitHub Discussions for questions and GitHub Issues for bug reports and feature requests, and provides a legacy SourceForge forum. |

In their own words
DataVeil
DataVeil masks sensitive SQL database data with fictitious values for testing, development, training, analytics and support. It supports Microsoft SQL Server 2014 or later, Azure SQL DB and MI, MySQL 5.7 or later, Oracle 12c or later, and PostgreSQL 14 or later. Choose random masking or deterministic masking, which can keep values consistent across databases and separate runs. Masks can retain value formats and partial content to help preserve statistical distributions. Discovery algorithms check suspected identifiers and account numbers, and users can add regular-expression patterns. DataVeil maintains referential integrity for defined foreign keys and supports user-defined dependencies. Before writing masked values, users can compare originals and results side by side. Projects run from the GUI, command line or batch files. The Community license includes generated PDF reports and automatically multi-threaded masking. It runs as a Java client with an embedded JDK 21 and uses JDBC. The free Community License never expires and covers databases up to 10GB. The Team license is $5,690 a year for an example configuration; its price depends on connectivity options and source-data size.
Jailer
Jailer is a free database tool for creating small data slices that retain referential integrity and for exploring data through table relationships. The project describes test datasets and investigating local problems using relevant production data as intended uses. It can export topologically sorted SQL, JSON, YAML, XML, and DbUnit datasets. The Data Browser follows foreign-key or user-defined relationships between tables in either direction. Its SQL Console includes code completion, syntax highlighting, database metadata visualization, and interactive charts with 11 chart types. AI features support natural-language database subsetting, SQL generation, and assistance analyzing, explaining, and refactoring queries. The AI Query Assistant supports Anthropic or OpenAI-compatible APIs, with examples including OpenAI, Azure, Groq, Ollama, and OpenRouter. Jailer uses JDBC and lists support features for databases including PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, Redshift, Snowflake, and ClickHouse. Liquibase integration can generate DDL scripts for database objects. The API provides programmatic data import and export through the Subsetter and Importer classes. It is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows under Apache License 2.0.
