Overview

DaVinci Resolve is a post-production application for editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio and still photography. It suits creators and teams who want those disciplines in one workflow; the free edition is a strong starting point, while projects above Ultra HD or 60 fps require Studio.

Key features

A broad post-production toolkit

Resolve brings editing, color work, effects, motion graphics and audio post together, with a Photo page for still-photo work in version 21. That breadth is useful when a project spans multiple stages, but is more than needed for someone seeking only a narrowly focused editor. AI tools cover facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing and Speed Warp retiming. Node-based compositing, keying, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracking and simulation add substantial effects capability, and third-party Open FX, audio plugins, titles and motion-graphics templates can extend it further.

Audio, storage and collaboration

Fairlight supports up to 2,000 tracks with real-time effects, EQ and dynamics processing, as well as surround mixing and live audio input. That capacity will suit demanding post-production sessions, though it is unlikely to matter to straightforward edit-only work. Resolve works with direct-attached drives, NAS and SAN systems, and supports major formats and project transfers involving Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for access from anywhere, making it relevant to distributed teams. GPU rendering supports the effects workflow.

Pricing

The free DaVinci Resolve download supports editing and finishing up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60 fps. That is a meaningful ceiling for many projects, but it rules out higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate finishing. DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295.00 USD per once. It raises support to 32K and 120 fps and adds temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, more than 45 additional GPU- and CPU-accelerated Resolve FX, and Python and LUA scripting plus developer APIs. Studio fits users whose delivery specs exceed the free limits or who need those additional tools; otherwise, the free edition avoids a purchase without sacrificing the stated Ultra HD and 60 fps limits.

Platforms

Resolve is available for Linux, macOS and Windows, and has a desktop app. Mobile app availability is also stated, but the supported operating-system list is desktop-focused. Its range of storage options and file-transfer support make it adaptable to established post-production setups.

Who it's for

Resolve is a strong fit for editors, colorists, effects artists, audio post teams and photographers who value a shared toolset, as well as teams using cloud collaboration or shared storage. It is less compelling for someone who needs only basic editing or whose workflow does not benefit from its many disciplines. For high-resolution or high-frame-rate delivery, Studio is the relevant edition; for work within Ultra HD and 60 fps, the free version may be sufficient.

Pros and cons

Pros: One application covers editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work, reducing the need to split those tasks across separate tools.
Pros: The free version supports up to Ultra HD and 60 fps, with no stated purchase price.
Pros: Studio's 32K and 120 fps ceilings and added noise reduction and effects serve more demanding delivery and finishing needs.
Cons: Free users cannot finish above Ultra HD or 60 fps.
Cons: The $295.00 USD per once Studio purchase is necessary for higher limits and its extra tools.
Cons: Its broad toolkit may be unnecessary overhead for users who only need a focused editing workflow.

Verdict

Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want editing, color, effects and audio tools in a single workflow, especially when its free Ultra HD and 60 fps limits fit your delivery needs. Choose Studio when work requires up to 32K or 120 fps, or its additional noise reduction and effects. Look elsewhere if you need only a small, focused editing tool rather than a broad post-production suite.
