In their own words
Dedoose
Dedoose is a cloud-based application for analyzing and visualizing qualitative and mixed methods data. It handles interviews, focus groups, documents, surveys, video, images, audio, social media, and websites, and lets researchers combine qualitative and quantitative material in an analysis process. Charts, graphs, and matrices help users explore findings, with filters for examining segments. Dedoose supports real-time collaboration with other Dedoose users at no additional cost. The first 30 days of a new individual account are free; paid plans start at $12.95 a month. Student and Individual plans charge for active months, while group plans provide centralized billing. Premier and Enterprise are annual plans with SSO integration and account administration. Dedoose says communications use an AES-256 CBC-encrypted SSL/TLS tunnel, passwords are not stored, and project data remains under customer control rather than being shared with third parties. The publisher says Leviathan Security Group verified its login system. Support includes a 24/7 self-service Learning Center and assistance from trained researchers. The service identifies academic, UX, health, and policy researchers among its users.
KH Coder
KH Coder is software for quantitative content analysis, text mining, and computational linguistics. It can be used with free-response survey answers, interview records, newspaper articles, and other text. The analysis options include word-frequency lists, keyword searches, KWIC, cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, co-occurrence networks, correspondence analysis, self-organizing maps, and coding cross-tabulations. Visualizations include network views with betweenness centrality and community detection, correspondence-analysis plots, heatmaps, line charts, and bubble plots. Statistical analyses can be viewed with the source-text context, and analysis can run without an internet connection. The English site lists text support for Catalan, Simplified Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, and Spanish. KH Coder runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with on-premise deployment. Users can customize it by editing R and MySQL code. The free Windows Starting Edition limits analyzable data and some features and is an older beta; the paid Base Edition is presented as the full version. The Mac Edition costs $99.00 USD once and requires Apple silicon, macOS 11 or later, and 5 GB of available disk space.
