In their own words
DeepQuill
DeepQuill is a desktop app for drafting and organizing a long book, available on macOS and Windows. Writers can arrange scenes into story beats, track scene status and story arcs, and inspect tension and point of view. Its codex connects characters and places to manuscript mentions and maps relationships among story elements. Research, notes and a diagramming canvas that can link to story elements support planning. Optional AI analyzes existing writing for entities, relationships, structure and character details; it does not produce prose or suggestions. Local analysis runs on the writer’s computer in the background while work continues, although a first analysis of a full-length novel may take hours depending on hardware. Projects are stored locally by default; enabled sync encrypts projects on the device before upload, and DeepQuill says it does not hold the decryption key. The app imports Scrivener projects and several document formats, and exports to Word, EPUB, FB2 or PDF. A free open beta and 14-day trial are listed. Paid licenses start at $9.99 per month and activate on up to three devices.
Quillstone
Quillstone combines research, drafting, fact-checking, audiobook creation, cover design, and publishing exports for journalists and nonfiction authors. It gathers PDFs, documents, notes, and offline references into an outlining workflow. Private AI tools can rewrite, expand, tighten, proofread, or continue prose using a sample of the writer’s work. Its fact checker adds inline citations, needs-citation markers, and a verification report. The app prepares EPUB, PDF, and M4B outputs, plus covers, metadata, and publishing checklists. Local chaptered audiobooks and layered cover designs are supported, with optional cloud narration and image generation. Quillstone Free costs nothing, billed forever; Pro costs $89, paid once as a one-time license. The Mac app is offline by default without analytics or telemetry, and project materials remain on the Mac. It requires an Apple Silicon Mac with M1 or later and macOS 15 or newer.
