Overview

DefleMask is a tracker for composing chiptune music around the sound systems of classic consoles and computers. It suits game-music composers who want those hardware palettes to shape their work; its main trade-off is a specialized workflow rather than a general-purpose synth setup.

Sound is generated in real time from emulators, and PareidoLink adds live collaboration in rooms users can create or join. The paid edition is a one-time purchase with free updates forever; the free Legacy edition is an unsupported demo.

Key features

DefleMask supports Genesis, SMS with FM Sound Unit, Game Boy, PCE, NES with VRC7 and FDS, C64, Arcade, Neo Geo, and MSX2. That breadth is useful when a project calls for a particular system's sound, but makes the tracker a less natural fit for composers seeking a broad, platform-agnostic instrument environment.

Editors for FM, macros, wavetables, and sample instruments provide several ways to shape sounds. The pattern matrix lets each channel follow its own pattern order, which gives arrangements room to develop independently across parts. Real-time MIDI input recording and chord input mode offer alternatives to entering every note directly in tracker patterns.

Exports include VGM, WAV, ROM, and videos with visualizations. The manual describes Touch Mode as useful on portable devices and touchscreen computers, while live multiplayer rooms make collaboration part of the workflow. Each file is limited to 144 samples, divided into 12 banks of 12; sample-heavy projects need to stay within that ceiling.

Pricing

DefleMask Legacy: 0.00 USD per free. It is 32-bit only, unsupported, and described as a demo, so it is best treated as a no-cost way to try the tracker rather than a supported long-term edition.

DefleMask: 14.99 USD per once, billed as a one-time purchase with free updates forever. This is the practical choice for composers who want the full purchase rather than an unsupported demo, with no recurring charge.

There is no free trial. DefleMask uses a freemium model, but the free edition's demo status and 32-bit-only limitation make the paid version the clearer option for sustained use.

Platforms

The desktop edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. DefleMask is also available on Android and iOS. Touch Mode is intended for portable devices and touchscreen computers, which may suit mobile composition; the desktop platform range will matter more to users building a computer-based workflow.

Who it's for

DefleMask is a strong fit for chiptune and video-game music composers who want to target the listed console and computer sound systems, edit their instruments at that level, and export formats including VGM and ROM. Its MIDI input, touch mode, and live collaboration broaden how those users can work.

It is a weaker fit for someone primarily seeking a general-purpose software synthesizer, or for a project that needs more than 144 samples in one file. The free Legacy edition is also a poor choice for users who need ongoing support.

Pros and cons

Pros: Wide selection of classic sound systems, with real-time emulator-based sound generation.
Pros: Instrument editors, per-channel pattern ordering, MIDI input, and chord entry support distinct composition approaches.
Pros: VGM, WAV, ROM, and visualization-video exports, plus live collaboration rooms.
Pros: The paid version is a one-time purchase with free updates forever.
Cons: Legacy is unsupported, 32-bit only, and described as a demo.
Cons: A 144-sample limit per file can constrain sample-heavy work.
Cons: Its system-specific focus is less suited to general-purpose synthesis needs.

Alternatives

For a different kind of synthesis workflow, SynthMaster One has a free iPhone-only app with 650 presets and 16-voice polyphony; choose it if those preset-based synth features matter more than DefleMask's system-targeted tracker workflow.

Cardinal is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, Windows, and web, with built-in modules; its builds cannot add modules to an existing build. It is a better fit when an open-source modular option matters more than DefleMask's console-oriented composition.

Vital offers a free Basic plan with 75 presets, 25 wavetables, and full synth features, making it worth considering for a general synth workflow. VCV Rack is free and open-source, with a simple open plugin API, for readers who prefer that approach. Dexed is free under GPL v3. Repro costs 149.00 EUR per once, includes two synths, requires host software or a DAW, and its demo emits a crackling sound. Helm is pay-what-you-want, including the option to pay nothing, and runs standalone or as a plugin. Sonic Pi is free and open source.

Verdict

Choose DefleMask if you want to compose for classic console and computer sound systems in a tracker, with instrument editing, flexible channel sequencing, and live collaboration. The one-time purchase with free updates forever is straightforward; look elsewhere if you need a general-purpose synth, ongoing support at no cost, or more than 144 samples per file.
