Overview

Tuta pairs end-to-end encrypted email with an encrypted calendar, and its clients are fully open source and auditable. It also uses quantum-resistant cryptography. Data is held on Tuta servers in ISO 27001-certified data centers in Germany; the company is based in Hanover and was founded in 2011.

The biggest constraint is the lack of mail protocol support. Readers who rely on a conventional third-party mail client should look elsewhere; Tuta is designed around its apps and browser access. For those comfortable with that trade-off, the combination of encryption, offline use and support across major operating systems is a strong case for choosing it.

Key features

Encrypted email and calendar

Email and calendar are encrypted end to end. The free plan includes one calendar, while paid plans provide unlimited calendars. Paid users can share calendars and send event invitations; invitations to external users can optionally be encrypted with a shared password. That makes paid plans more practical for people coordinating schedules, while the single free calendar is suited to a basic personal schedule.

Apps, offline use and import

Tuta offers apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as browser access. Offline use is supported, with full offline support listed as a paid-plan benefit. Desktop clients can import EML and MBOX files, a useful route for bringing over existing messages. The range of clients is a strength, but it does not remove the protocol limitation for readers who want to use other mail software.

Storage, aliases and domains

The free plan’s 1 GB of storage is enough to begin, but it leaves little headroom for a long-running mailbox. Revolutionary raises that to 20 GB and includes 15 extra email addresses and three custom domains. Legend expands capacity to 500 GB, with 30 extra addresses and 10 custom domains. These larger allowances matter most to users consolidating several addresses or keeping a substantial archive; casual users may not need the top tier.

Pricing

Tuta is freemium, with an ongoing free plan and two paid tiers billed annually. The paid prices are per user per month.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	Free	1 GB storage, one calendar, three labels and end-to-end encryption.
Revolutionary	3.00 EUR per month (billed annually)	20 GB storage, 15 extra email addresses, three custom domains, unlimited calendars and offline support.
Legend	8.00 EUR per month (billed annually)	500 GB storage, 30 extra email addresses, 10 custom domains, unlimited calendars and priority email support.

Free is the sensible option for a light personal mailbox that can live within 1 GB and one calendar. Revolutionary is the practical step up for custom-domain use, offline work or more storage, though its 20 GB may be limiting for large archives. Legend is aimed at people who need much more capacity, more domains or priority support rather than simply basic encrypted email.

Family multi-user support can be activated through support on paid plans. Revolutionary family members cost €3 per user per month, and shared mailboxes cost €3 per month. On Legend, family members cost €8 per user per month and shared mailboxes cost €8 per month. These charges make the family option scale by member and shared mailbox, so households should account for each rather than treating a paid subscription as a single all-in family price.

Platforms

Apps are available for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, with browser access as another option. That breadth serves households and individuals using a mix of phones and computers. Offline support adds value for paid users who need access without a connection; the free plan does not include full offline support among its benefits.

Who it's for

Tuta is a good fit for readers who prioritize encrypted email and calendar, want open-source clients, or need apps across desktop and mobile platforms. Custom-domain users and people managing multiple addresses will find the paid plans more suitable than the tightly capped free tier. It is not the right choice for anyone who depends on standard mail protocols or wants to use a preferred third-party mail client.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end encrypted email and calendar, with quantum-resistant cryptography, give privacy-minded users a consistent security focus.
Pros: Open-source clients across Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux provide broad platform coverage, plus browser access.
Pros: Paid plans scale from 20 GB to 500 GB and add custom domains, more addresses and unlimited calendars.
Cons: No mail protocol support rules out readers who need a conventional third-party mail client.
Cons: The free plan’s 1 GB, single calendar and three labels are restrictive for users with growing mailboxes or multiple schedules.
Cons: Family pricing is per member, with an additional monthly charge for each shared mailbox.

Alternatives

Proton Mail is another freemium choice with a free plan, 1 GB storage and apps across web, desktop and mobile platforms. Aster Mail is worth considering for readers who want an open-source option and a free plan with 10 GB encrypted storage, five aliases and one custom domain.

eclipso Mail Europe offers a free plan with 4 GB storage, one email address and no aliases, and supports mobile and desktop apps. Mailfence has a free plan with 1 GB total storage split between email and documents, and web and mobile access.

Mailo may suit readers who want a free 1 GB mailbox with five aliases and IMAP4 or EAS access, though its free tier includes ads. CounterMail is a paid service with a free trial and apps for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows as well as web access.

NevTan Mail is another freemium option, with a free plan and apps for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows as well as web access. mailbox is a paid alternative whose annual Light plan includes 2 GB storage, three aliases, calendar and address book, and IMAP and POP3 access. Verdict

Choose Tuta Mail if encrypted email and calendar, open-source clients and wide platform support matter more than using a standard mail client. Its free plan makes it easy to start, while Revolutionary is the more capable fit for custom domains and regular offline use. Look elsewhere if protocol support is essential, or if the free plan’s 1 GB and single calendar would quickly become constraints.
