In their own words
Devilbox
Devilbox is a Dockerized LAMP and MEAN stack for local development on Linux, macOS, and Windows hosts. It supports an unlimited number of projects: adding a project directory creates a virtual host without restarting services. New projects get SSL certificates signed by Devilbox's certificate authority, and its built-in wildcard DNS makes project addresses available to the host system.
The stack supports Apache or Nginx with PHP, plus services such as MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Memcached, and MongoDB. Configuration can be set globally, by service version, or for a specific project. Its intranet includes phpMyAdmin, phpPgAdmin, phpRedMin, Adminer, OpcacheGui, and a GUI for viewing sent emails. Outgoing project email is intercepted and stored locally for review. After the required Docker images are first downloaded, Devilbox can run offline. Its documentation says official Docker images are built nightly and published with available security patches. The free plan is listed at free, with no price or usage limits stated on the opened pages.
Flox
Flox gives developers a way to define reproducible software environments, including project packages, variables, and shell hooks, with configuration managed as code. It presents these environments as working across macOS, Linux, and WSL2. Its Nixpkgs-powered catalog contains more than 190,000 packages. FloxHub supports syncing and sharing environments, with package lists, earlier versions, and change logs available for review. GitHub Actions can install Flox and activate environments in CI workflows, while a VS Code extension supports package management, activation, and running services; the extension is also compatible with Cursor. Flox Skills are described as helping Claude Code, Codex, and skills.sh agents create environments, services, and builds and onboard repositories. Flox says environments include signed, hash-pinned software bills of materials and build provenance. The free Personal plan includes three private FloxHub environments and five private packages. Team costs $20/user/mo; Enterprise pricing is custom.
