In their own words
DevPod
DevPod creates repeatable development environments in containers described by devcontainer.json. It can place those environments on the developer’s computer, a reachable remote machine, or a public or private cloud, while the client itself runs locally without a server backend. The software is open source and extensible, with maintained providers for Docker, Kubernetes, SSH, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and DigitalOcean; users can also add providers from GitHub, a URL, or a local provider.yaml file. It works with VS Code and the JetBrains suite, and other IDEs can connect over SSH. Prebuilds, automatic shutdown during inactivity, and Git and Docker credential synchronization are included. Machine providers use secure tunnels, including AWS Instance Connect, Google Cloud IAP, and Azure Bastion. DevPod is free, with desktop downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux and a CLI for macOS, Windows, and Linux on AMD or ARM. Port forwarding depends on an IDE or SSH session.
FlyEnv
FlyEnv is a desktop application for managing local development environments on Linux, macOS and Windows. It supports container-free local workflows and offline operation. Developers can install and switch among language runtimes including PHP, Node.js, Python, Java, Go, Ruby and Rust, then scope runtime settings to a project. Those settings are stored in a.flyenv file and control the toolchain used by terminals, editors and run commands. The local-site module includes settings for custom domains, document roots, server ports, PHP binding, rewrite rules, reverse proxies and HTTPS. Listed database integrations include MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Qdrant, ClickHouse and Neo4j; its AI integrations include tools and services such as Codex, Ollama and Claude Code. The free plan includes 3 local sites and 3 custom projects per runtime. The Pro License costs 10.00 USD once and includes unlimited local sites and custom projects, with one active device at a time. FlyEnv is intended for personal or business development use.
