Overview

Dexed combines a standalone synth with plugin use and a librarian for DX7 cartridges. That makes it more than a way to make sounds: it can also handle program files and SysEx communication for a DX7-oriented workflow. The sound engine follows the original instrument’s characteristics, but the stated limitation matters to anyone who needs exact hardware reproduction.

Key features

One panel exposes 144 DX7 parameters to DAW automation, giving users extensive control from within a music project. Real-time VU meters for each operator provide feedback while shaping a patch. The three engine types—Modern, Mark I and OPL Series—offer distinct options within Dexed’s DX7-focused approach.

For librarian work, Dexed supports DX7 input and output SysEx messages, including controller change. It can load and save DX7/TX7 SysEx programs and save one program as a separate SysEx file, which is useful for managing or moving sounds individually. Microtuning and MPE support, contributed by the Surge Synthesizer Team, extend its use beyond a narrowly hardware-style setup.

VST, AU and LV2 plugin formats sit alongside a standalone app. That combination gives it several ways to fit into a music setup without changing its central focus on DX7-style synthesis and program data.

Pricing

Dexed is free software under the GPL v3 license: the Free software plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid tier to unlock a different feature set in the plan structure described here, making it an uncomplicated choice for users who want its synth and librarian capabilities at no cost. The trade-off is not a subscription or quota; it is the project’s modest documentation and its warning that the engine is not a perfect DX7 clone.

Platforms

Dexed supports Linux, macOS and Windows, with VST, AU and LV2 formats and a standalone app. It is a practical fit for musicians on any of those desktop systems, though the stated operating-system support does not extend to mobile platforms.

Who it's for

Choose Dexed if you want a free, DX7-oriented synth with broad DAW automation, or need to manage and exchange DX7/TX7 program data through SysEx. It is less suitable if exact DX7 reproduction or extensive project documentation is essential to your workflow.

Pros and cons

Pro: The 144 automatable parameters make detailed DX7 control available from a single panel.
Pro: SysEx input/output and DX7/TX7 program-file handling make it useful as a librarian as well as a synth.
Pro: Free GPL v3 software with Linux, macOS and Windows support removes both purchase cost and a single-platform constraint.
Con: The project cautions that Dexed is not a perfect DX7 clone, so exact hardware matching is not a sound assumption.
Con: Minimal Wiki documentation may leave users with less guidance when learning its controls and workflow.

Alternatives

Voltage Modular is a free modular-synth option for Windows and macOS, with standalone and plugin versions; choose it if modular synthesis is a better fit than Dexed’s DX7 focus. Vital offers a free Basic plan with 75 presets, 25 wavetables and full synth features across Linux, macOS and Windows, making it a broader free synth alternative for those not specifically seeking DX7/TX7 program handling.

Repro is a paid alternative for readers willing to pay 149.00 EUR per once for one product containing two synths; its demo emits crackling sound. Pianoteq is a paid alternative with a free trial and support for iOS as well as desktop platforms; its Stage plan costs 139.00 USD per once and includes two instrument packs, up to 48 kHz and limited preset loading. Consider these instead when their stated plan characteristics better suit your platform or instrument needs.

Virtual Drummer is a paid drum-focused option with a free trial and a free Odd Meter MIDI Pack. BBC Symphony Orchestra has a free Discover tier with 34 instruments, 47 techniques, one mix signal and a 240MB size. IK Multimedia ReSing offers a free plan with two voices, two instruments and one RVC import, but no model generation. PREMIER SOUND FACTORY has free instrument offerings, including Hellotron Premier G, which requires full Kontakt 5.7 or higher rather than Kontakt Player. These are alternatives for readers whose needs align with their respective drum, orchestral, voice or Kontakt-instrument focus rather than DX7 synthesis.

Browse Virtual Instruments or Software Synthesizers for more options.

Verdict

Dexed is an easy recommendation for musicians who want a no-cost DX7-style synth and a capable DX7/TX7 SysEx librarian in one package. Its automation, platform coverage and file handling are substantial strengths; look elsewhere if you need a faithful hardware clone or more than minimal documentation.
