Overview

Serif adds an AI worker to shared business email, handling routine replies and operational follow-up. It best suits small businesses and operations teams with repeatable inbox work and a need to keep people in control of uncertain messages. Its workflow reach is broader than drafting, but the usage-based tiers and separate per-user team plan make cost fit depend on how the team works.

Key features

Serif can qualify and route inquiries, answer common questions, collect paperwork, send quotes, and follow up on unpaid invoices. That makes it a stronger fit for inboxes connected to day-to-day operations than for teams that only want help composing replies. It works with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, or with an address of its own.

Ambiguous or sensitive messages go to the team, and users can approve replies before letting Serif act independently. That graduated review path is a meaningful safeguard for teams introducing automation to customer or billing conversations. Serif says emails are not used to train general AI models and are not stored on its servers. It also says learned assistant data is encrypted at rest, email access is limited to the user and assistant, and data is never sold; it states compliance with SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, and HIPAA.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes $100 in credits with no credit card required. It is a low-friction way to try the service, though the credit allowance is finite. Every plan includes a 7-day free trial with full access.

Lite costs 30.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes Serif AI, email triaging and drafting, plus access to the meeting recorder, task manager, and knowledge base. It is the entry paid tier for an individual or team that needs the core email functions, though those additional tools may matter only if they are part of the workflow.

Standard costs 50.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and provides five times Lite usage plus True Voice. It suits users who need more capacity or that voice feature; those who do not need either may find Lite the more direct choice. Pro costs 200.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for 20 times Lite usage and dedicated support. That larger allowance and support may suit heavy users, but the substantial jump over Standard needs to be justified by workload.

Team costs 50.00 USD per month per user, billed monthly, with pooled usage, shared playbooks and knowledge, centralized billing and team administration, and priority support. Pooling is useful when demand varies across colleagues, but per-user billing means the total rises with team size. Enterprise has custom pricing and adds dedicated onboarding, custom AI models, SCIM, SSO, role-based access, and custom data-retention policies; it is aimed at organizations needing those controls rather than a published fixed price.

Platforms

Serif supports web, macOS, Windows, and iOS, and connects to Gmail or Outlook. Desktop downloads are offered for Mac with ARM and x64 processors and for Windows. Android is coming soon, so mobile teams relying on Android should look elsewhere for now.

Who it's for

Serif is best for small businesses and operations teams that handle repeatable shared-inbox tasks and want escalation for sensitive or ambiguous cases. It is less compelling for teams seeking only a lightweight email-writing aid, or those needing Android access today. Teams should also weigh the monthly usage tiers against their expected volume before choosing a plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: It combines triage and drafting with routing, paperwork collection, quotes, and invoice follow-up, covering more of an operational inbox than reply composition alone.
Pros: Human escalation and approval let teams retain judgment while they build confidence in automated replies.
Pros: A credit-based free option and a full-access 7-day trial provide two ways to evaluate the service before committing.
Cons: Standard and Pro scale usage at five and 20 times Lite, so readers must match capacity needs to the plan rather than compare features alone.
Cons: The Team price is per user, making cost rise with headcount even though usage is pooled.
Cons: Android support is not yet available.

Alternatives

Zoho TeamInbox is worth considering for teams that want a freemium shared-inbox product with three shared incoming channels and 25 rules on its Starter plan. Coherence may suit teams seeking a free AI option with up to three users, 50 shared AI credits per month, and 2,500 records.

Trengo is an alternative for teams comparing broader platform availability and conversation-based plans; its Boost tier is 299.00 EUR per month billed annually for 10 users and 6,000 conversations per year. Drag is a lower-priced paid option for Gmail shared inboxes, starting at 16.00 USD per month billed monthly with board views and assignments.

Loop Email is another paid option for readers comparing multi-platform email tools. Help Scout may fit teams wanting a free tier with five users, one inbox, and one Docs site, capped at 100 contacts per month. Shared Inbox by Canary offers a 10.00 USD per month Starter plan billed monthly, with a shared inbox and an AI chatbot capped at 100 training materials and 100 responses. Gmelius is an alternative for Gmail-focused teams comparing shared email tools, with its Meli plan at 19.00 USD per month billed annually for up to five users and 5,000 conversations per month.

Verdict

Choose Serif if your small business or operations team wants an assistant that can carry repeatable shared-inbox work through routing and follow-up, while handing judgment calls back to people. Its strongest case is that combination of practical workflows and controlled escalation. Look elsewhere if Android access is essential, if you need a simpler drafting tool, or if the tier's usage and per-user costs do not match your workload.
