In their own words
Disroot Email
Disroot Email provides free email accounts through webmail and desktop or mobile email clients. Its Roundcube webmail includes threaded messages, filters, folders, attachment previews, and MIME and HTML support. Mail clients can connect using IMAP over SSL, SMTP with STARTTLS, SMTPS with TLS, or POP over SSL; suggested options include Thunderbird, Evolution, KMail, ClawsMail, Mailpile, K-9 Mail, FairEmail, and iOS Mail. Connections to the mail server use SSL, while outgoing messages use TLS if the recipient’s server supports it. Messages remain unencrypted on Disroot’s servers unless users encrypt them themselves. Disroot says its data is stored on its own servers in a Netherlands data center. Email logs may include usernames, IP addresses, and sender and recipient addresses; they are retained for 48 hours and not backed up. The free email plan includes a 1 GB mailbox and 64 MB attachments. Plus addressing routes sub-addresses to the original mailbox. Users can link a custom domain for sending and receiving mail through a lifetime feature tied to a donation amount they choose. The service supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, and extensions.
OwnMail
OwnMail is an encrypted email service for Android, iOS, and the web, with user-controlled keys, custom domains, and an AI assistant. The service says messages use hybrid RSA and ML-KEM-768 encryption. Users can create unlimited aliases and send or receive through any alias. The assistant answers natural-language inbox questions, can be disabled, and runs inside the encrypted mailbox without training on user data. A free account provides an @ownmail.ai address and 1 GB of encrypted storage without a credit card. The Free plan costs nothing, billed monthly, and includes core features subject to fair use with limited AI history and daily queries. Essential costs $4.99 a month for 10 GB of searchable encrypted history; Pro costs $9.99 a month for 50 GB. Users can export or delete data and download mailboxes in standard formats. Attachments can reach 200 MB. Gmail import maps labels to folders. The Progressive Web App installs from a browser, works offline, and supports fingerprint or Face ID unlock. A 14-day trial is listed.
