In their own words
docTR
docTR is a free deep-learning OCR library for finding and recognizing text in documents, aimed at document automation and research. Its pretrained OCR predictors first detect text and then recognize it, while a layout predictor identifies regions such as tables, figures, and headers. It reads PDFs and images; web-page input requires the optional HTML extra. Results can be rendered as plain text or exported as a JSON-serializable nested dictionary. The project describes its predictors as optimized for CPU and GPU inference. Users can train custom detection, recognition, layout, and table-structure models when pretrained models are not suitable. Documentation covers loading and sharing models through the Hugging Face Hub, and includes a minimal REST API deployment template and a browser demo. Installation is available through pip, Git, or official Docker images. The library requires Python 3.11 or higher, and pretrained weights download on first use and are cached locally. For AWS Lambda, the guide advises disabling multiprocessing and placing the model cache within /tmp. The project uses the Apache License 2.0.
Scanbot Data Capture SDK
Scanbot Data Capture SDK provides modules that extract key-value pairs from structured documents, with the aim of replacing manual data entry with automatic capture. Modules cover credit cards, checks, vehicle identification numbers, OCR, text patterns, EHIC cards, German medical certificates, and ID cards. Credit card capture reads the card number, cardholder name, and expiration date for Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Check capture reads MICR details such as check, routing, and account numbers, with support for US, French, Kuwaiti, Australian, Indian, Israeli, UAE, and Canadian formats. The SDK supports Android, iOS, Linux, web, and Windows; listed languages include JavaScript, TypeScript, C, Java, Python, and Node.js. Scanbot says processing happens on-device and offline, usage statistics are not collected, and the SDK cannot access customer scans. Its annual license includes technical support, updates, and feature upgrades. Pricing is on request, generally starting at $2,500 a year for simple use cases, and depends on capture requirements and the number of apps or domains. A free 7-day evaluation trial is available, but its license is not for production apps.
