In their own words
Docuflair Redact
Docuflair Redact detects and irreversibly removes personal and sensitive information from documents. Its automated detection uses OCR, dictionaries, patterns, and rules across 259 personal data categories. Teams can organize documents into projects with rules, review, and approval, then create separate redacted exports for different recipients. The software accepts more than 100 input formats, including PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, TIFF, JPG, PNG, MSG, and EML, and exports PDF 1.7 and PDF/A-1b, PDF/A-2b, and PDF/A-3b. Security features include an append-only SHA-256 hash-chain audit log, granular permissions, and optional AES-256 encryption at rest. All editions support self-hosting, and processing can run without an internet connection after setup. Basic costs €299 a month, Professional €599 a month, and Enterprise €999 a month, each with annual billing and a 12-month minimum term. A free browser sandbox is available, but it is a public test instance rather than a production deployment. The pricing FAQ says there is no traditional trial model.
Excise
Excise is a free, open-source PDF editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its central feature is permanent redaction: it removes text, images, and vector graphics from PDF content rather than placing a visible cover over them. By default, the cleanup also removes metadata, attachments, JavaScript, thumbnails, and hidden layers, and reports those removals. The app handles search, text selection and copying, annotations, page organization, Bates numbering, file-size reduction, and AcroForm filling, flattening, and creation. Its command-line tools support batch work and stable JSON output; `unredact` checks for leaked redacted text, while `audit` looks for text beneath opaque overlays. Excise reads and writes AES-128 and AES-256 encryption and inspects digital signatures against the operating system trust store. Signature inspection does not check revocation or evaluate timestamp and long-term validation material. Dynamic XFA layouts are experimental and cannot be filled. Downloads include packages for Apple Silicon macOS, Windows 10/11 x64, Ubuntu/Debian, and x64 or ARM64 Linux; builds are unsigned, not notarized, and lack auto-update.
