Key features

Onboarding and account management

Platforms can choose Stripe-hosted, embedded, or custom-built onboarding, with identity verification and a networked option for existing Stripe users. That range gives product teams room to shape the experience while retaining a Stripe-managed route. Prebuilt connected-account dashboards and embedded controls cover payments, payouts, settings, notifications, and payment methods; full account management makes Connect a substantial operational layer, not just a checkout component.

Payments and payouts

Connect supports more than 40 payment methods and payments in 135+ currencies across online, mobile, subscription, invoicing, and point-of-sale flows. Platforms can split payments, route funds across borders, set payout timing, and offer instant payouts. That combination suits marketplaces with varied payment flows and payout needs, though the per-payout charge in one pricing model makes payout volume a cost to track.

Compliance and integrations

Risk controls include risk-based KYC and AML checks, sanctions screening, MATCH list checks, and fraud management. Connect also lists PCI DSS Level 1 certification and PSD2 Strong Customer Authentication compliance. It integrates with Stripe products and APIs, with an App Marketplace and partner ecosystem for integrations and custom solutions. Stripe advertises 24x7 phone, chat, and email support.

Connect can automatically generate US 1099 forms, with e-filing and delivery fees varying by pricing model. Platforms should factor those fees into their choice rather than assume tax reporting is included on identical terms in both models.

Pricing

Connect has no free plan. Its pricing depends on whether Stripe or the platform sets connected accounts’ processing fees; other usage fees may apply.

Stripe handles pricing for your users: Free. Stripe sets and collects processing fees from connected accounts, with no platform fees for accounts, payout volume, tax reporting, or per-payout fees. This fits platforms that want Stripe to handle user pricing and avoid those platform charges.
You handle pricing for your users: 2.00 USD per month, billed at $2 per monthly active account, plus 0.25% + 25¢ per payout sent. An account is active in a month when a payout goes to its bank account or debit card. This suits platforms that want to set user pricing, but makes both the active-account count and payout volume relevant to cost; other usage fees may apply.

Platforms may qualify for revenue share when using Standard accounts with Stripe Checkout or Elements and reaching a payments volume run rate of $1 million USD. The headline $2/mo starting price therefore does not describe every platform’s likely bill: the usage-based account and payout charges, plus any other applicable fees, matter.

Platforms

Connect supports Android, iOS, web, and API, with broad API and SDK coverage. That makes it relevant to software products that need to build payment operations into multiple client experiences, rather than only accept payments through a standalone web checkout.

Who it's for

Connect is best suited to software platforms, marketplaces, and businesses coordinating payments among multiple parties. It is a stronger fit when onboarding, split payments, payout control, connected-account dashboards, or risk checks are central requirements. A business seeking only a straightforward payment checkout may find this multi-party toolkit more than it needs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Hosted, embedded, and custom onboarding let platforms choose how much control to take over account setup.
Pro: Payment splitting, cross-border routing, payout timing, and instant payouts address several money-movement needs in one platform.
Pro: Dashboards, account controls, and risk checks support ongoing management of connected businesses, not just initial payment acceptance.
Con: The platform-managed pricing model adds both a monthly active-account charge and a percentage-plus-fixed fee per payout, so costs rise with usage.
Con: The no-platform-fee model leaves Stripe in control of connected-account processing fees, which is a poor match for platforms that need to set those prices themselves.

Alternatives

NMI is another paid option for teams comparing platforms across Android, API, iOS, Linux, web, and Windows.

Checkout.com may suit registered charities seeking free payment processing in countries where it operates; it also offers tailored pricing.

PayPal Multiparty Payments is worth considering when a platform or marketplace can meet its approval requirement.

Rainforest offers a card-transaction plan priced at 0.20 USD per month for $15m–$25m monthly volume, plus interchange and DFA at passthrough; that volume-specific plan may suit a business in that range comparing transaction pricing.

Finix offers a Direct Merchants — Standard plan at 250.00 USD per month, with transaction and other fees also applying; it is an option to compare for direct merchants processing their own goods or services.

Stax Connect is another paid alternative, with custom pricing.

Flute Embedded Payments offers partner pricing that scales with transaction volume.

Moov has standard pricing at 500.00 USD per month with a $500 monthly minimum and per-feature transaction fees; its custom pricing is an alternative for teams comparing a monthly-minimum model with custom terms.

Verdict

Choose Stripe Connect if your platform needs to onboard and manage connected businesses while splitting, routing, and paying out funds, and you can align with one of its two pricing models. Its main advantage is the breadth of payment operations and account controls in a single platform; look elsewhere if you need a simpler checkout or must set connected-account pricing without accepting per-account and per-payout charges.
