Overview

DuckStation focuses on making PS1 games playable and fast while keeping the project maintainable. It supports the original PlayStation, also known as PS1 or PSX, and takes a more configurable approach than a bare-bones emulator. That suits players who want to tune presentation and play behavior; it is less suitable if you expect the software to supply games or the console BIOS.

A PS1 or PS2 BIOS image is required and is not included. The project recommends dumping one from your own console; games are also not provided, and the free plan requires legally purchased, dumped games. The source is available, but DuckStation is not open source: its CC-BY-NC-ND terms prohibit publishing modified versions.

Key features

Graphics and enhancements

The hardware renderer supports D3D11, D3D12, OpenGL, Vulkan and Metal. Upscaling, texture filtering and 24-bit color give players ways to improve the original image, while PGXP geometry precision, texture replacement, adaptive downsampling and post-processing shader chains offer finer control. This is a strong set of options for players who care about visual presentation, though those looking for a simple, uncustomized setup may not need the extra flexibility.

Play management and controllers

Save states, rewind and runahead support different play styles, and CPU overclocking adds another performance adjustment. Multi-disc support, memory card editing and save importing help manage longer games and existing saves. Controller support covers digital and analog devices, rumble, and up to eight devices through multitap. GunCon and Justifier lightguns can be simulated with a mouse, a useful option for compatible games when dedicated lightgun hardware is not in use.

Integrations and game formats

RetroAchievements and Discord Rich Presence connect play with those services. Supported game formats include bin/cue, MAME CHD, single-track ECM, MDS/MDF, CCD and unencrypted PBP, giving players several ways to use their game files.

Pricing

DuckStation is free. The Free plan is free and includes the Android app; it requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games. There are no paid tiers to weigh against that option, but the BIOS and game prerequisites remain the main cost in effort.

Platforms

DuckStation supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. Desktop downloads include a Linux AppImage and universal macOS builds; macOS 13.3 or newer is required. Windows requires version 1809 or newer, and Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are unsupported, so older PCs running those versions are not a fit.

The maker provides no support for the Android app and asks users not to email for help with it. Google Play’s data-safety disclosures say no data is collected and no data is shared with third parties.

Who it's for

DuckStation suits PS1 players who already have legitimate game dumps and a BIOS, and who value graphics tuning, flexible save management or varied controller support. It is a weaker choice for people who need official Android assistance, use an older Windows release, or want a project whose license allows publishing modified versions.

Pros and cons

Pro: A wide range of renderers and image enhancements lets players tailor how PS1 games look.
Pro: Save states, rewind, multi-disc support and memory card tools cover more than basic game launching.
Pro: Support for lightgun simulation and up to eight devices gives it flexibility for different controller setups.
Con: Users must provide both a BIOS and their own game files before they can play.
Con: Android users do not receive maker-provided support.
Con: Windows versions older than 10 build 1809 are unsupported, and the source license restricts publishing modified versions.

Alternatives

PlayStation Emulators is a useful starting point for comparing options in the same console category; Game Console Emulators and Emulator Software broaden the search beyond PlayStation.

Choose Avocado if you want another free option across Android and desktop platforms and are comfortable with early development, variable game compatibility and a required PlayStation BIOS. PCSX-Redux is worth considering if its GPL-2.0 license and free Windows, Linux and macOS downloads better suit your needs. QuackStation is another free option for Android and desktop platforms.

ReARM is an alternative with a free, self-hosted community edition for software-bill-of-materials storage and retrieval, rather than a PlayStation emulator. Gameboy by raphamorim, ScePSX, Vita3K and Gamma are other options to compare.

Verdict

Choose DuckStation if you want a free, feature-rich way to play PS1 games and already have the required BIOS and game files. Its graphics, save and controller options are the clearest reasons to pick it; look elsewhere if you need Android support from the maker, a less restrictive source license, or compatibility with older Windows systems.
