| Editing | Its built-in viewer and editor provide annotation, zoom, deskew and rotation functions. | Users can reorder, interleave, rotate, crop, deskew, and adjust the brightness and contrast of scanned pages. |
| Purpose | Dynamic Web TWAIN is a browser-based document scanning SDK that lets web applications control TWAIN, WIA, ICA, SANE and eSCL scanners. | NAPS2 is free, open source scanning software for scanning documents and saving them as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, or PNG. |
| Security | Dynamsoft states that the product provides built-in HTTPS, digital signatures, encryption in transit and at rest, and cached-data deletion after unexpected closure. | Scanner sharing uses HTTPS with an automatically generated self-signed certificate by default, may fall back to HTTP, and can be configured to require HTTPS or use a custom certificate. |
| Security controls | Documented protections include encrypted data handling, encrypted local caches, origin allow-listing for the service, HTTPS, authentication prompts for local resources and encrypted PDFs. | Organization settings can disable automatic saving and enforce HTTPS or trusted certificates for ESCL scanner sharing. |
| What it does | Dynamic Web TWAIN is a browser document-scanning SDK that controls TWAIN, WIA, ICA, SANE and eSCL scanners, displays and edits images, and uploads them to servers. | NAPS2 scans paper documents and saves them as PDF, TIFF, JPEG or PNG files. |

In their own words
Dynamic Web TWAIN
Dynamic Web TWAIN is a browser-based document-scanning SDK for web applications that control scanners using TWAIN, WIA, ICA, SANE, and eSCL. Scanning runs locally through the Dynamsoft Web TWAIN Service, and document data is not sent to Dynamsoft servers. Scanned pages can be exported as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, or BMP, including multi-page PDF and TIFF files. The built-in viewer and editor provide annotation, zoom, deskew, and rotation. Disk caching supports unlimited pages per session, and a 64-bit service mode is available for large data. Supported client systems include Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, and Linux distributions for x64, ARM64, or MIPS. Listed browsers include Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on Windows and Linux, and Safari on macOS. The SDK works with React, Vue, Angular, JavaScript, and TypeScript, with server-side compatibility for Node.js, PHP, ASP.NET, Java, and Python. A 30-day trial gives full SDK access without feature restrictions and requires no credit card. Pricing is available on request; there is no free plan. PDF Rasterizer, Barcode Reader, OCR, and Webcam add-ons are licensed separately.
NAPS2
NAPS2 is free, open-source software for scanning documents and saving them as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, or PNG. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports WIA and TWAIN drivers with flatbed or automatic document feeder scanners, including duplex scanning. Users can reorder, interleave, rotate, crop, deskew, and adjust scanned pages’ brightness and contrast. OCR makes scans searchable, supports more than 100 languages, and can add text recognition to imported PDFs. NAPS2 can share scanners across a local network using ESCL, including with compatible Android and iPhone apps, but it must remain running on the server for sharing to work. It can send email through Gmail and Outlook, with the email address and secure sending token kept on the user’s computer and sent only to the relevant provider. Optional developer tools include a command-line interface for automation and a .NET scanning library. The free plan has no ads or restrictions, though OCR results cannot be saved directly to a text file.
