Overview

Lexy adjusts exercise difficulty using phoneme-level performance, then combines voice tutoring, touch activities and typing practice. Its curriculum covers phonics, spelling, reading, fluency and comprehension, so it reaches beyond isolated sound drills. That breadth suits learners who need practice across several literacy skills, although Lexy is a more focused choice than a general reading library.

Personalised learning content uses Google Gemini, with Google Cloud Text-to-Speech for narration. Accessibility provisions include OpenDyslexic, high contrast, screen reader support and keyboard navigation; Lexy says it meets WCAG 2.1 AA. The maker says student learning data is encrypted and never shared with third parties, and that Lexy has no ads or data selling. For schools, it states FERPA and GDPR compliance, with SOC 2 in progress.

Key features

Adaptive phonics: Phoneme-level tracking changes exercise difficulty as a learner progresses. That makes the practice responsive for individual learners; educators who also need oversight will benefit from a school plan's dashboard and progress tools.
Varied practice: Voice tutoring, touch activities and typing provide different ways to work through the structured curriculum. This range is useful for learners who respond better to varied interaction than to one mode alone.
Premium content: Premium includes 50+ phonics modules, a dictionary of more than 10,000 words, augmented-reality rewards, detailed progress reports and advanced AI narration. These additions make the paid family tier more substantial than a basic practice subscription.
School tools: The Educational Plan adds an educator dashboard, progress tracking, session reviews and Apple Classroom integration. The schools page also names Apple Schoolwork as a native integration; the free school tier instead offers basic progress tracking and community support.

Pricing

Lexy is freemium. The free family option is free, requires no card and includes full AI tutoring, voice-based learning and adaptive phonics. It is a meaningful way to begin, but Premium is the tier for the full structured literacy programme and its expanded materials and reports.

Premium: 3.99 USD per month, billed $3.99/month. It suits a family seeking the complete programme, including 50+ phonics modules, the 10,000+ word dictionary, augmented-reality rewards, detailed progress reports and advanced AI narration.
Educational Plan: 200.00 USD per year, billed $200/year. It provides full Premium access for students plus an educator dashboard, progress tracking, session reviews and Apple Classroom integration; it is free to start for up to five students. This is the family-and-educator bridge for small groups, though the stated starting allowance is five students.
Education Classroom: 299.00 EUR per year, billed €299.00 / year, for up to 30 student and teacher seats.
Education Department: 999.00 EUR per year, billed €999.00 / year, for up to 100 student and teacher seats.
Education Institution: 1899.00 EUR per year, billed €1,899.00 / year, for up to 250 student and teacher seats.
Education Large Institution: 2999.00 EUR per year, billed €2,999.00 / year, for up to 500 student and teacher seats.

Each of the four EUR education tiers includes an educator dashboard and progress reports, adaptive AI personalisation, and FERPA/GDPR data export. The increasing seat caps make the tiers legible for organisations of different sizes, but buyers should match the cap and currency to their needs. The school free tier covers up to five students with full AI tutoring, voice learning and adaptive phonics, plus basic progress tracking, mobile app access and community support; paid school and family plans include priority support.

Platforms

Lexy runs on iOS, macOS and the web. That gives households and schools options across Apple devices and browsers, but Android is not among its supported platforms.

Who it's for

Lexy is aimed at dyslexic learners of all ages and the people supporting them: families, educators, reading specialists, SEN coordinators and classroom teachers. Families can start free and move to Premium for the broader programme; small school groups can begin with the five-student free tier, while larger teams can choose an education tier sized to their seat count.

Pros and cons

Pro: Phoneme-level adaptation across a curriculum spanning phonics through comprehension gives learners more than fixed drills.
Pro: Voice, touch and typing practice, together with named accessibility options and WCAG 2.1 AA, support different ways of engaging with lessons.
Pro: A no-card family start and a school free tier for up to five students lower the commitment required to begin.
Con: The family Premium plan is a narrower package than the school tiers in educator oversight; families wanting reports get them, but school dashboards and session reviews sit with the Educational Plan.
Con: The five-student free school allowance and tiered school seat caps require institutions to select a plan around their group size.
Con: Android support is absent, and the education plans span USD and EUR pricing, which may complicate purchasing for some teams.

Alternatives

Dyslexia Learning Apps is a useful next stop for comparing the wider category. Choose Reading Mountain if you want a separate phonemic-awareness app with a no-login free Basecamp option; its Individual plan is $29/month for one student. Grafari is worth considering if broader platform coverage, including Windows and Android, matters; its annual premium plan is billed $240 annually. Pick StarSpell for a one-student home or school licence at 12 GBP per year, with a free trial but no free plan. Wordshark is another dyslexia-learning alternative to compare.

EduFlip suits web-only self-paced practice when one student profile and Level 1 forever on its free tier are enough. Cody Reading is a web option for decodable stories, with three stories per week on its free-forever plan. DytectiveU is worth considering when Android support or its free school access in Spain is relevant. ReadingDoctor may suit schools seeking a one-term trial for up to 30 students, or households looking for an annual student subscription.

Verdict

Choose Lexy if a dyslexic learner needs adaptive literacy practice across multiple skills, with voice and accessibility options, or if a school wants the same approach with educator tools. Its low-cost family entry and graduated school seats are compelling; look elsewhere if Android access is essential or your organisation needs a single-currency purchase path.
