Overview

HDShredder works independently of a filesystem or operating system, so it addresses whole-device sanitization rather than ordinary file deletion. It can handle hard disks, SSDs, USB drives, CompactFlash and SD/MMC cards. That scope makes it appropriate for clearing media before disposal, reassignment or reuse; it is not aimed at removing a few selected documents while leaving the rest of a drive intact.

Miray Software AG, based in Munich, Germany, has offered the product since 2006. Technical support is provided through a ticket system. The maker recommends starting with the Free Edition to confirm compatibility: some recognized drives require a higher edition.

Key features

The Free Edition wipes entire storage media. Basic and later editions can target individual partitions, which is the practical choice when a whole-drive erase would be excessive. Standard provides 15 international security standards, giving organizations defined methods to choose from instead of a single basic level.

Professional is designed for controlled, repeatable work. It allows custom deletion patterns and procedures with up to 398 runs, then creates detailed reports that can be saved to USB media or, on Windows, network drives. Those records are valuable when an operator must document each wipe; they add little for an occasional personal cleanup.

Enterprise licenses focus on throughput, erasing up to four, eight or 16 media simultaneously according to the edition. That materially changes the economics for a repair bench or asset-processing operation, while offering no advantage for one drive at a time.

The Windows download includes the Windows application and a self-booting environment that can start from USB or CD/DVD. Linux users can run an AppImage on various distributions. This boot option is particularly useful when the installed operating system should not be involved in the erase.

Pricing

All paid editions are one-time purchases rather than subscriptions. The Free Edition is free, is for private use, supports media up to 4 TB total capacity and provides one security level. It is the sensible first step for a home user, but the capacity ceiling, noncommercial license and possible drive-specific edition requirement limit it.

Basic Edition is 19.90 EUR per once for private use, adds three security levels and selectable partitions. Choose it when partition targeting matters but commercial licensing and the Standard method set do not.

Standard Edition costs 39.90 EUR per once and adds 15 international security standards plus workplace and volume licenses. It fits commercial operators needing recognized procedures. Professional Edition is 99.00 EUR per once, adding custom methods, reports and workplace and volume licenses for documented workflows.

Professional Edition Portable costs 199.00 EUR per once and is a portable service version for use on clients’ PCs, with a technician license. For batch work, Enterprise Edition 4x costs 299.00 EUR per once, 8x costs 499.00 EUR per once, and 16x costs 799.00 EUR per once; each raises simultaneous capacity to the corresponding number of media. Free and Basic licenses are noncommercial, while Standard and Professional also permit commercial use.

Platforms

HDShredder supports Windows and Linux. Windows users receive both installed software and bootable USB or CD/DVD media. Linux users receive an AppImage. Supported storage includes hard disks, SSDs, USB drives, CompactFlash and SD/MMC cards.

Who it's for

Choose HDShredder for whole-device erasure when filesystem-independent operation, partition selection or certified overwrite methods matter. The Free and Basic editions suit private users; Standard and Professional suit businesses that need commercial licensing, defined standards, custom procedures or reports. Portable Professional is aimed at technicians working on clients’ machines, and Enterprise is for operations processing several devices concurrently. Look elsewhere if your primary need is selective file cleanup rather than media wiping.

Pros and cons

Pro: Physical-level erasure covers HDDs, SSDs and multiple flash formats without relying on the filesystem.
Pro: Bootable Windows media and a Linux AppImage support erasure outside a normal installed system.
Pro: Professional reporting and up to 398-run custom procedures support auditable workflows.
Con: The free tier is private-use only and capped at 4 TB, so larger or commercial jobs require an upgrade.
Con: Partition selection starts with Basic, and parallel processing is reserved for expensive Enterprise licenses.

Alternatives

Active@ KillDisk is worth choosing when you need a freemium option that also runs on macOS, alongside Windows and Linux, with personal one-time licenses from 64.95 USD.

R-Wipe & Clean is the better direction for Windows or macOS users seeking trace cleaning, scheduled tasks and a free trial rather than primarily whole-drive erasure.

BleachBit suits readers who want free, open-source cleanup on Linux, macOS or Windows.

BCWipe Total WipeOut is a paid, trial-available alternative for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Macrorit Data Wiper is a Windows-only freemium choice with a home-user free edition and limits on recycle-bin wiping.

Blancco Drive Eraser is a paid, trial-available option for Linux and Windows with certified erasure and centralized reporting.

Crypto Shredder is a free Windows alternative.

D-Secure File Eraser is a cross-platform paid service covering file and folder erasure at 40.00 USD per year.

File Shredder Software provides a broader comparison of tools in this category.

Verdict

HDShredder is a strong choice for private users, technicians and businesses that need filesystem-independent, whole-media erasure with an upgrade path to standards, reports and parallel throughput. Its main reason to look elsewhere is equally clear: the free tier’s 4 TB and private-use limits, plus edition-dependent compatibility, can make another tool more suitable for larger, commercial or selective file-cleaning jobs.
