Overview

A single account brings together email, a cloud drive, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. That makes eclipso more compelling as a personal communications hub than as a bare mailbox; readers who only need email may not benefit from the extra services. The independent, owner-managed company was founded in 2003 and is based in Bayreuth, Germany.

Security features include OpenPGP and S/MIME encryption, digital signatures, TLS 1.3, DKIM, DMARC, SPF, HSTS and perfect forward secrecy. Two-factor authentication, trainable spam filtering, personal spam rules and multi-stage antivirus scanning add useful account and inbox protections. eclipso says it hosts all data exclusively in German data centers under German and EU GDPR law.

Key features

Mail can be managed in the web app, eclipso app, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird or Apple Mail. POP3, SMTP and IMAP support mail access, while CalDAV and CardDAV cover calendar and contact synchronization. WebDAV is limited to Premium and Business, so Connect users who need it must pay for a higher tier.

The free mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android combines email, calendar, contacts and Drive with PGP, PIN protection, dark mode and push notifications. A free desktop toolbox for PC and Mac adds mail notifications, inbox and compose shortcuts, Drive synchronization, and SMS and fax access. These companion tools extend the service beyond webmail, though the feature list does not make the desktop toolbox a full mail client.

Freemail is supported by newsletters, banners and an advertising footer. Its daily send cap is 25 emails, compared with 250 on Connect, 500 on Premium and 5,000 on Business. That distinction matters for frequent senders: the free plan is better suited to ordinary personal correspondence than high-volume use.

Pricing

Freemail is free, with no minimum contract period and cancellation anytime. It includes 4 GB storage, one email address and no aliases. The advertising and 25-email daily cap make it a practical way to try the service, but a limited fit for people who need multiple addresses or regular bulk sending.

Connect costs 1.49 EUR per month, with a 12-month minimum booking and payment in advance. It includes 20 GB storage, 11 email addresses and 10 aliases. This is the lowest-cost paid plan and a substantial increase over Freemail’s storage and address allowance, but still caps sending at 250 emails daily.

Premium costs 2.99 EUR per month on the same 12-month, prepaid terms. It raises storage to 40 GB and includes 25 email addresses, 24 aliases and 200 credits per month. The higher 500-email daily cap and WebDAV access make it a better fit for heavier personal use, though the plan still requires a year’s commitment.

Business costs 5.99 EUR per month, prepaid with a 12-month minimum. It provides 100 GB storage, 51 email addresses, 50 aliases and one mail domain. Along with a 5,000-email daily cap, it supports sending to up to 3,000 recipients, distribution lists, CalDAV/CardDAV, WebDAV, German server location and a GDPR Article 28 data-processing agreement. It is the clearest choice for organizations that need those business provisions; support response times are a maximum of four hours on business days during support hours, versus 24 hours for Connect.

Paid plans do not renew automatically: they end unless extended, after an email reminder 14 days before expiration. That avoids recurring charges but requires users to manage extensions themselves. MailSpace storage add-ons are single payments with no follow-up costs and lifetime runtime: +25 GB costs 69.00 EUR per once, +50 GB costs 129.00 EUR per once, and +100 GB costs 199.00 EUR per once. Each can be combined with any plan.

Platforms

eclipso supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Its combination of mobile apps, a PC and Mac toolbox, and support for Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail gives users several ways to access mail. Protocol support includes IMAP and SMTP as well as POP3; CalDAV and CardDAV extend synchronization to calendars and contacts.

Who it's for

Choose eclipso if you want email, storage and personal-organizer tools under one account, with multiple encryption options and access across mobile, desktop and web. Freemail suits modest personal use; Connect or Premium make more sense when storage, aliases or sending capacity become limiting. Business is aimed at organizations needing a mail domain, higher sending limits, German server location and a data-processing agreement. Look elsewhere if you need custom-domain support on a lower tier: eclipso’s listed custom-domain support is no.

Pros and cons

Pro: OpenPGP and S/MIME, digital signatures and multiple transport and domain protections give security-conscious users several safeguards.
Pro: Email, Drive, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes share one account, with broad client and protocol support.
Pro: Business combines a high daily send limit and support for up to 3,000 recipients with a GDPR Article 28 agreement.
Con: Freemail has advertising, only 4 GB storage, no aliases and a 25-email daily send limit.
Con: Every paid plan requires a minimum 12-month booking and advance payment, then ends unless manually extended.
Con: WebDAV is reserved for Premium and Business, and custom domains are not supported outside the Business plan’s one mail domain.

Alternatives

Consider Aster Mail if open-source software, Linux support or a free plan with 10 GB encrypted storage and five aliases matters more than eclipso’s broader organizer suite. Proton Mail is another freemium option, with a free plan offering 1 GB storage and one email address. Choose Disroot Email for a free service with 1 GB mailbox storage, webmail, standard mail protocols and optional PGP encryption.

Tuta Mail offers a free plan with 1 GB storage, one calendar, three labels and end-to-end encryption. CounterMail is a paid service with a free trial. EPRIVO is a paid service with a free trial. Neir has a free plan with a 10 MB mailbox and 10 random aliases. NevTan Mail has a free plan with 5 GB storage per mailbox and up to 10 mailboxes. For broader comparisons, see Secure Email Providers, Email providers and Personal Email Services.

Verdict

eclipso is a strong fit for people who want encrypted email alongside storage and organizer tools, or for businesses that need German hosting and a data-processing agreement. Its broad access options and tiered capacity are useful strengths. Choose another provider if you need a simple free inbox without advertising, or if prepaid annual booking and manual renewal do not suit you.
