Overview

Edgegap brings hosting, a server browser and automated matchmaking together on public edge infrastructure. Its regionless hosting caches and deploys game servers on demand across more than 615 locations without an SDK. The orchestrator places deployments on an available server; Edgegap says this can reduce player latency by up to 58%, a potential benefit rather than a guaranteed result.

Hybrid orchestration can deploy to a Private Fleet alongside Edge Cloud. This gives studios a way to combine on-demand public capacity with persistent private servers. Founded in October 2018, Edgegap is based in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.

Key features

Automated matchmaking and a server browser run on fully managed clusters. Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot plugins support containerizing and deploying game servers. Service integrations include Unity Gaming Services matchmaking, Heroic Labs Nakama, PlayFab and Epic Online Services Lobbies; supported netcode options include Mirror, Unity Netcode for GameObjects, Fish Networking, Photon Fusion 2, PurrNet and Netfox. That breadth suits studios assembling multiplayer stacks around those engines and services, though it does not make every game architecture interchangeable.

Edgegap lists instant DDoS protection among its capabilities, unlocked when a credit card is added. Its team supports live games 24/7, with community support and a documentation-trained AI chatbot also offered. Enterprise services add a dedicated 24/7 team, guaranteed response times and an uptime SLA, a more suitable support arrangement for teams with operational commitments.

Edge Cloud containers run for at most 24 consecutive hours. Longer-running containers belong on Private Fleets. Distributed Relays are for peer-to-peer networking: they provide neither compute nor authoritative game-server capacity, so they cannot replace hosting for server-authoritative games.

Pricing

Edgegap has no general free plan, but it offers three limited free trials. The Matchmaking & Server Browser trial runs on a shared environment for three hours, with all features but limited resources. The Game Server Hosting trial requires no credit card and includes one app, two versions, 1.5 vCPU, usage caps, one concurrent deployment and a 60-minute uptime cap per deployment. The Distributed Relays trial includes up to 50 CCU and 160 GB egress, but no compute. These trials are useful for evaluating distinct components, not for sustaining a live service.

Edge Cloud is $0.00 USD per month, billed per vCPU per minute of use. With no active servers, the charge is $0; monthly egress costs $0.10/GB. Deployments range from 0.25 to 4 vCPU, across 615+ locations, with no commitment. This is the most flexible option for variable workloads, but its 24-hour runtime cap and egress charges matter when estimating ongoing use.

Private Fleet (Bare Metal) is $0.03 USD per month, billed per vCPU per hour, monthly and always on. The stated host rate is $280 per host/month at the 12-month rate or $350 monthly. Each host provides 16 vCPU, of which 15 are usable, and includes 6 TB of egress per host/month across 58 locations. Persistent 24/7 capacity suits longer-running servers, but always-on billing is less suited to workloads that can scale down to zero.

Matchmaking & Server Browser has three dedicated-environment tiers: Hobbyist is $0.03 USD per month, billed at $0.0312/hour and estimated at $22/month for 24h/30d usage, with 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM; Studio is $0.15 USD per month, billed at $0.146/hour and estimated at $105/month for the same usage, with 6 vCPU and 12 GB RAM; Enterprise is $0.55 USD per month, billed at $0.548/hour and estimated at $395/month for that usage, with 18 vCPU and 48 GB RAM for high traffic. The hourly billing makes actual costs depend on runtime; the larger tiers buy more capacity, not a stated change to the core matchmaking service.

Distributed Relays 100 CCU costs $8.00 USD per month and includes 325 GB egress. The 500 CCU tier costs $115.00 USD per month and includes 1,625 GB egress. Both are monthly capacity choices for peer-to-peer networking, not game-server compute.

Platforms

Edgegap supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Web and Windows, as well as API access. Container support, persistent storage and custom domains are also supported.

Who it's for

Edgegap is aimed at game studios and developers building multiplayer titles, including mobile, VR, extended reality and WebGL/HTML games. It is a strong fit when deployment placement, managed matchmaking or a mix of public edge hosting and persistent private capacity matters. Teams needing containers that run beyond 24 hours should use Private Fleet; teams seeking a relay as a substitute for authoritative hosting should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Broad edge reach: on-demand deployments across more than 615 locations can serve geographically dispersed players without requiring an SDK.
Multiple infrastructure models: hybrid orchestration pairs Edge Cloud with Private Fleet, while Edge Cloud usage can fall to $0 when no servers are active.
Useful integration coverage: engine, service and netcode options span several common multiplayer development stacks.
Runtime and service boundaries: Edge Cloud stops at 24 consecutive hours, and relays provide no compute or authoritative server function.
Cost depends on usage and capacity: Edge Cloud adds egress charges, while always-on Private Fleet billing can be inefficient for intermittent workloads.

Alternatives

Consider Metaplay if local development with a full SDK and no hard limits is more important than Edgegap's edge-hosting model. brainCloud is another freemium alternative with development and support plans. Choose Photon Engine if a free development tier capped at 20 connected users and 60.0 GB monthly traffic fits your prototype. Colyseus suits teams that want to self-host its open-source software on their own servers without restrictions. Normcore offers a free Public plan with unlimited applications, concurrent users and rooms. AccelByte Gaming Services has a free public-cloud foundations option while building, with usage fees as players arrive. PlayFab offers a free-to-start option before a title passes 100K players. SmartFoxServer is another freemium alternative with a free Community Edition.

Verdict

Choose Edgegap if your multiplayer game benefits from on-demand placement across many edge locations, managed matchmaking or a hybrid path to persistent private capacity. Its strongest case is the combination of broad geographic reach and more than one hosting model. Look elsewhere if your containers must run beyond 24 hours but you do not want an always-on Private Fleet, or if you need authoritative compute from a relay service.
