| Compliance | EmailEngine does not come with SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification; its compliance posture depends on the environment where it is deployed. | SOC 2 Type II is on the roadmap, and MailFrame says it is not yet HIPAA-eligible as a Business Associate. |
| Data handling | EmailEngine runs on the customer’s infrastructure, caches sync metadata in the customer’s Redis, and fetches message bodies on demand rather than storing them. | MailFrame says it retains raw email content for the minimum time needed to deliver the response and surface debugging, and does not sell or share customer data. |

| Support | The maker says support goes directly to the developer who wrote the code, and its annual subscription includes developer support. | Support varies by plan from community support on Free to email support on Indie and priority support on Startup. |
| Trial | Each installation can start a full-functionality 14-day trial from its dashboard without signup or a credit card. | The maker says the Free tier offers 100 parse operations per month with no credit card required so users can validate the product before upgrading. |

In their own words
EmailEngine
EmailEngine is a self-hosted email API that connects Gmail, Microsoft 365, and IMAP mailboxes through a unified REST API. It sends webhooks when mailbox messages or state change, and can send mail through the connected account’s SMTP server or provider API. Native integrations use the Gmail API and Microsoft Graph; authentication options include managed OAuth2, service accounts for Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 app-only access, and shared or delegated mailboxes. An optional MCP server, currently in beta, lets connected AI clients search, read, file, draft, and send email with approved access. The admin interface shows sync status and queue details, with a Prometheus endpoint and Grafana dashboard for operations. EmailEngine runs on the customer’s infrastructure, uses Redis for sync metadata, and fetches message bodies on demand rather than storing them. A server and Redis using the noeviction policy are required. The annual subscription is $1,450 a year, excluding VAT where applicable, and includes developer support; each installation can start a full-functionality 14-day trial without signup or a credit card.
MailFrame
MailFrame is a developer-first API that turns raw email into JSON validated against a schema. A request can include raw RFC 822 MIME or plain-text email-like input and a JSON Schema, with validated JSON returned synchronously. Developers can provide an inline schema without registering or choose from prebuilt schemas covering Stripe and Shopify receipts or orders, PayPal, Amazon, Apple App Store and Google Play receipts, GitHub notifications, invoices, travel bookings, and shipping notifications. Signed HMAC-SHA256 webhook delivery supports retries, attempt history, a dead-letter queue, and replay, for downstream systems that accept webhooks. The current API accepts raw MIME and plain-text input; PDF and image parsing are planned, not currently supported. MailFrame says it retains email content only as long as needed for delivery and debugging, does not sell or share customer data, and stores API keys in hashed form. The service is in limited early access, onboarding developers in weekly batches. The Free plan provides 100 parse operations per month without a credit card; paid plans start at $19 per month. SOC 2 Type II is on the roadmap, and MailFrame says it is not yet HIPAA-eligible as a Business Associate.
