Overview

Osprey is an IEP-focused planning and documentation app for education and therapy practitioners. It is best suited to individuals and small coordinated teams that want to connect planned activities with session data and progress reviews. Its central strength is that connected workflow; team buyers should weigh that against custom pricing and the absence of named current integrations.

Osprey v1.0 covers planning, running sessions, and documentation, with support for IEPs, accommodations, service logs, goal monitoring, compliance reporting, and data import and export. For a wider category view, see Special Education Software.

Key features

Activity planning and session records

A practitioner can describe a goal or lesson in plain language and receive an IEP-aligned activity to accept or edit. Keeping the practitioner in that decision is important: generated material is a starting point, not a substitute for professional judgment. Session measures include DTT trials, interval recording, frequency observation, articulation probes, and rubric scoring, a useful range for teams collecting different kinds of performance data.

Progress monitoring and coordination

Progress views cover independence across sessions, curriculum-based measurement against an aimline, and combined progress across active IEP goals. This helps link individual observations to goal-level review. Practices and centers can use shared learner records, supervisor oversight, and visibility across disciplines, making Osprey a stronger fit for coordinated services than a collection of isolated practitioner records.

School workflows

For schools and districts, Osprey describes IDEA-aligned documentation, tracking generalization across settings, and a connected functional behavior assessment and behavior intervention plan workflow. These capabilities speak to cross-setting and compliance work; districts should still discuss rollout, privacy agreements, and administrative requirements directly.

Privacy and operation

Access to learner records is governed by organization, team, and care-team permissions. Processing identifiable learner data with AI requires recorded consent at the learner level. Workloads are hosted in U.S. Azure regions, and Nisana says it does not train generative-AI models on learner records or facilitator content.

Nisana acts as a HIPAA business associate only under a written BAA, which must be in place before facilitators process protected health information in the service. That makes a signed agreement a prerequisite for relevant clinical use, not an optional follow-up. The individual practitioner app is described as offline-capable for buildings with unreliable Wi-Fi. Broader integration with other systems remains on the roadmap, so organizations that depend on established integrations should confirm their needs before choosing Osprey.

Pricing

Osprey is paid software with a free plan and a free trial. The Individuals plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes a live web demo plus iOS, Android, and Windows apps, with no waitlist. It is the clearest fit for an individual practitioner assessing or beginning with the workflow; it is not a published route to team pricing or coordinated administration.

Practices and centers have custom pricing, with shared team visibility and tailored onboarding; formal plan and invoice amounts are provided during onboarding. This suits providers that need shared records and oversight, but they must obtain a quote to assess cost. Schools and districts also have custom pricing, with coordination across roles and sites and direct discussion of rollout, privacy agreements, and administrative needs. That model fits institutional deployments whose requirements need discussion, though it offers no published amount for budget comparison.

Buyers should settle those commercial terms directly, especially before planning a larger rollout.

Platforms

Osprey supports Android, iOS, web, and Windows. The individual plan specifically includes a live web demo and apps for iOS, Android, and Windows. The broad platform mix can accommodate mobile session work alongside web use, while offline capability is specifically described for individual practitioners.

Who it's for

Osprey is aimed at BCBAs, RBTs, special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, school psychologists, counselors, general educators, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Its shared records and cross-discipline views make it particularly relevant where those roles coordinate around learners. An individual practitioner can use it for planning and data collection; a district or larger organization should verify rollout, permissions, integrations, and HIPAA arrangements against its own operating requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros

One workflow from activity to progress review: planning, varied session measures, and goal-level views are connected rather than framed as separate tasks.
Useful coordination scope: shared learner records, supervisor oversight, cross-discipline visibility, and school-oriented workflows address team needs.
Clear privacy controls: organization and care-team permissions, learner-level consent for AI processing, U.S. Azure hosting, and a stated no-training policy give buyers concrete safeguards to assess.
Practical offline option: individual practitioners can work in buildings with spotty Wi-Fi.

Cons

Team costs require a quote: practices and districts cannot compare a published price before discussing onboarding or rollout.
Integration needs may be a blocker: broader connections to other systems are still on the roadmap.
HIPAA use has a formal prerequisite: PHI processing requires a written BAA in place first.

Alternatives

SameGoal Special Education is worth comparing for school-year, per-student pricing: Standard is 12.98 USD per year and Plus is 15.28 USD per year, while the listed Standard terms include unlimited users, 50MB attachments per document, and document history to the last week. It has no free plan, but does offer a free trial.

PowerSchool Behavior Support is another paid Android, iOS, and web option; pricing is not published and a demo is the route to discuss it.

Progress Desk may suit buyers who prefer a one-time device-specific purchase: its iPad plan is 59.00 USD per once per iPad, and its Mac plan is 99.00 USD per once for up to two Macs.

Adaptive XI Intelligence is an alternative for a solo buyer seeking a student-focused package: Solo costs 588.00 USD per year for 12 months and one student, with an AI lesson planner, student login, AI assessments with auto-grading, and a reading tracker and digital library.

FrenalyticsEDU is a web-based freemium alternative with a free tier capped at 10 student profiles, one staff account, and one daily learning session per student; its EDU Essentials plan includes 15 profiles and two staff accounts.

Frontline Special Education Management is a web-based paid alternative for district buyers to discuss directly with Frontline.

GoIDEA is a web-based paid alternative with a custom quote based on district needs and the number of schools or students managed.

Spiro is another paid web option, operated by Medthrive Ltd, whose privacy policy lists a registered address in London, United Kingdom.

Verdict

Osprey is the best fit for an individual practitioner or small coordinated education or therapy team that wants activity planning, session measurement, and IEP progress documentation in one workflow. Its breadth of measures, shared-record options, and explicit privacy controls make that case compelling. Look elsewhere if published team pricing or current integrations are essential; organizations handling PHI should also secure the required BAA before use.
