Overview

The app serves teaching, SEND, school support, administration and back-office staff, with roles ranging from day-to-day assignments to permanent positions. Engage Education, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Watford, connects the app to its school staffing work. A consultant confirms bookings, so applying in the app is not the same as securing a role.

EngageNow works alongside Engage Education registration, and it guides unregistered users through that process. That connection gives the service a clear staffing focus, but it also makes the app a poor fit for candidates who want to search and apply without joining an agency's process.

Key features

Matching and applications

Users can tune matches by role, subject, key stage, qualifications and travel distance, then customise push-notification preferences. This is useful for school staff with specific experience or travel limits, although the app's purpose is school staffing rather than broad job discovery. Vacancies show the school, date, role and pay, and users can apply in the app; an Engage Education consultant then confirms the booking.

Availability, bookings and timesheets

Day-by-day availability settings, unavailable dates and a calendar for upcoming bookings help users coordinate work around their schedules. The home dashboard brings upcoming work and pending timesheets together, and shows whether submitted work has been approved. That makes EngageNow more useful for managing assignments once work is underway than a vacancy-only app.

CPD, referrals and data

Registered users can access free role-relevant CPD resources. The referral feature awards Amazon vouchers for qualifying work, which may appeal to users with colleagues to recommend, but the reward depends on that work qualifying.

Engage Education says personal information is used to match users with jobs and manage bookings, not sold to third parties, and visible to the agency and schools a user engages with. Its school-platform page describes AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, role-based access controls and Microsoft Azure hosting. Users can contact their consultant or app support team. Engage Education's in-house payroll team processes payment based on approved timesheets, making approval status relevant to getting paid.

Pricing

EngageNow is free to download and use, with no subscription fees or charges for applying to jobs; free CPD resources are included. There is no paid plan to weigh against the free option. Its value is clearest for candidates who want agency-matched school work and booking administration without an app fee; the registration requirement remains the more significant commitment.

Platforms

EngageNow runs on Android, iOS and the web. Its hosted model supports employer accounts and application collection, while payment options are not part of the app's listed capabilities; payroll is handled by Engage Education.

Who it's for

Choose EngageNow if you work in UK schools, are open to registering with Engage Education, and want job alerts, applications, availability, bookings and timesheets in one service. It particularly suits staff moving between short-term and longer placements who need to track approval as well as find work. It is not the right choice for people who want an unaffiliated job board, a wider range of industries or to manage payroll themselves.

Pros and cons

Pros: Matching preferences cover role, subject, key stage, qualifications and travel distance, helping school staff target relevant vacancies.
Pros: Applications, availability, bookings and timesheet approval tracking are combined, covering more of the assignment process than job discovery alone.
Pros: The app is free to use and includes free CPD resources for registered users.
Cons: Access is tied to Engage Education registration, and a consultant confirms bookings.
Cons: Its focus on UK school staffing makes it unsuitable as a general-purpose job-search tool.
Cons: Payment follows approved timesheets, so workers need to keep track of approval rather than treating submission as the end of the process.

Alternatives

For a broader selection of job-board products, browse Job Board Software.

Jobvertise is worth considering for web-based recruiting with a free tier and a free trial; its free plan allows 3 resume views per day and 5 days to view applications, while Starter is 39.99 USD per month for 50 views per day, capped at 500 per month.
WP Career Board may suit teams wanting a self-hosted or API-connected board, with a free plan that includes job posting, applications, dashboards and company profiles.
WP Job Manager is a free WordPress job-board plugin built by Automattic; consider it if a self-hosted WordPress board is a better fit than an agency staffing app.
JobWP offers unlimited job listings and core board and application features on its free plan for one self-hosted WordPress site, making it an option for a site owner building a board.
Kardow is a paid alternative with Android, iOS, web and API platforms; its Starter plan is 79.00 USD per month for one board, 2,000 import credits per month and one team seat.
JBoard is a paid web and API option for larger job-board operations, with a Standard plan at 249.00 USD per month and an Advanced plan also offered.
JobBoardKit may suit operators who want a web-based paid board with online payments and listing caps; its Startup plan is 149.99 GBP per month for up to 100 active listings.
JobKit has a free plan with unlimited jobs and subscribers, but charges a 10% commission on paid jobs plus Stripe's transaction fee.

Verdict

EngageNow is a sensible choice for UK school staff who want agency-matched roles and a single place to manage availability, bookings and timesheet approval. Its no-fee access and work-management features are compelling for that audience. Look elsewhere if you want independent job searching, work outside schools or a service without Engage Education registration.
