Overview

The app opens a directory and can scan its subdirectories, then presents thumbnails in pages of 25. Search works against metadata values, and the app can discover and catalog tags already present in a collection. That combination is more helpful for organizing a folder of photos than a single-file metadata viewer, though the 25-image pagination keeps browsing deliberately incremental.

The browser-based interface runs on the user’s machine and needs no remote server. Its database is local; thumbnails are stored in a .thumbnails folder inside opened photo directories, while metadata changes are written directly to image files. This is a privacy-conscious workflow, but direct writes make a backup prudent, especially given the project’s warning that the alpha software may destroy valuable images.

Key features

Metadata editing and tag search

IPTC fields include Keywords, Caption, Copyright, Creator, City, and Country. EXIF coverage includes camera and lens information, exposure settings, and GPS coordinates. Tag autocomplete draws on tags discovered in the collection; users can add or delete tags, with those changes saved immediately. A prompt for unsaved changes provides a safeguard for other edits, but it does not remove the risk attached to writing directly to image files.

Supported formats are JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC/HEIF; HEIC/HEIF support requires pillow-heif. The metadata engine uses Exiv2 through custom C++ bindings, with FastAPI, SQLite, Pillow, and pywebview also in the technology stack. These implementation details do not change the practical caveat: valuable originals should not be the place to assess alpha software.

Offline GPS context

A metadata hover overlay can show date, location, and keywords, and converts GPS coordinates to place names through offline reverse geocoding. That is useful when reviewing geotagged images without internet access, though it is a viewing aid rather than a substitute for a broader mapping workflow.

Pricing

Simple Photo Meta is free. It is GPLv3-licensed open-source software, with no paid tier to unlock its metadata tools. The free plan includes the application’s local browsing, search, and editing capabilities; the main trade-off is not a quota or seat limit but the alpha-stage risk to files.

Platforms

The desktop app is intended for macOS Apple Silicon and Linux; Windows is untested. The README describes Apple Silicon DMG and Linux Flatpak downloads, but the GitHub releases page showed no releases. That leaves a practical gap between the stated platform targets and a clear release channel, so users should confirm they can obtain a suitable build before relying on it.

Who it's for

This is a reasonable fit for Linux or Apple Silicon Mac users who want local IPTC and EXIF editing, metadata-value search, and offline place-name lookup, and who are comfortable working with copies while the software is alpha. It is a poor choice for anyone who needs mature, low-risk editing of irreplaceable image files or Windows support.

Pros and cons

Pros: Local operation avoids a remote server, and the local database and thumbnails support a private collection workflow.
Pros: Tag discovery, autocomplete, immediate tag edits, and metadata search help manage collections rather than just inspect individual files.
Pros: Offline reverse geocoding turns GPS coordinates into place names without an internet connection.
Cons: The maker labels it alpha and warns that it may destroy valuable images, a serious concern for a tool that writes to originals.
Cons: Windows is untested, and the stated macOS and Linux download routes are not matched by releases on the GitHub releases page.
Cons: HEIC/HEIF support depends on pillow-heif, adding a prerequisite for those files.

Alternatives

For a different free metadata workflow, consider ExifTool, which supports Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted use. ExifCleaner is a free desktop option for Linux, macOS, and Windows; Metadata Stripper is free and open source for JPEG, PNG, and WebP on those desktop platforms.

Photini is another free GPL-3.0-or-later option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Windows users can also consider Photo Metadata Editor, a free desktop app distributed as an MSI installer and portable ZIP. For mobile use, EXIF Magic is a free download for Android and iOS as well as macOS, with no in-app purchases, subscription, or account.

Exif Pilot offers a free Basic EXIF editor on Windows. If a paid cross-platform option is acceptable, SetEXIFData costs 12.94 EUR per once, with a serial number valid for macOS, Windows, and Linux and initially up to three activations. For more options in this category, browse Photo Metadata Editors.

Verdict

Choose Simple Photo Meta if you use Linux or an Apple Silicon Mac and want private, local metadata search and editing with offline GPS place lookup. Its strongest case is a useful collection-oriented workflow at no cost. Look elsewhere if your priority is protecting valuable originals: the alpha warning and direct writes make this a tool to approach with backed-up copies, not a dependable editor for irreplaceable files.
