Overview

ExifTool combines a Perl library with a command-line application for reading and changing metadata across many file types. Its free distribution and broad reach suit photographers, archivists and developers who need detailed control rather than a guided desktop editing workflow.

It can read metadata, write or delete tag values, and copy or move metadata between files. The breadth is useful when a workflow spans camera-specific notes and standards beyond EXIF; the trade-off is that safe use requires attention to command-line inputs and configuration.

Key features

Broad metadata support: Handles formats such as EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3. That range is valuable for mixed image and media libraries, though writes are limited to metadata types supported by the target file format.
Camera maker notes: Reads manufacturer-specific notes from many digital cameras, including Apple, Canon, DJI, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony. This makes it a strong fit when ordinary tag editors miss camera-specific information.
Flexible inputs and operations: Accepts file names, directory names or standard input, and can copy or move metadata between files as well as alter individual tag values. Directory input supports batch-oriented work without requiring a separate paid plan.
Original-file retention: When writing metadata, it preserves the original by adding _original to the filename by default. This provides a fallback, but also means workflows should account for the extra files.
Developer integration: The full Perl distribution includes documentation and API libraries; a supplied C++ interface communicates with an external ExifTool process. The C++ route exposes ExifTool features to applications, but it is process-based rather than a standalone native library interface.
Security precautions: Some options can execute Perl code, and user-defined code in an .ExifTool_config file is executed from specified locations. Applications passing file names should use -- or ensure names do not begin with a dash or Unicode minus sign, and configuration files should contain only trusted code.
Validation limits: ExifTool is not designed as an image validator. Its -validate option adds checks mainly for JPEG and TIFF, so readers who need broader validation should choose a purpose-built tool.

Pricing

ExifTool is free software: the ExifTool plan is free, with no paid plans listed. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. The full Perl distribution includes the API libraries and documentation; Windows executables and the macOS package omit some files from that full distribution.

The author says the Perl Artistic License permits embedding ExifTool in a commercial application under stated conditions and does not require a donation. Anyone distributing it commercially should consider those license conditions when planning an integration.

Platforms

ExifTool is cross-platform, with Perl-distribution use on Linux and macOS and an EXE version for Windows. It can run without installation by extracting the Perl distribution on Mac or Linux, or the EXE on Windows. The maker also offers Windows executables and a macOS package. Its API and self-hosted classifications make it relevant to software integrations and locally managed workflows, not just desktop use.

Who it's for

ExifTool is best suited to photographers and media-library maintainers who need broad metadata coverage, batch-capable command-line operations or camera maker-note access, as well as developers embedding metadata handling in Perl or C++ applications. It is less suitable for people seeking a guided graphical editor or comprehensive image validation; the command-line focus and limited validation scope are meaningful constraints.

The official site identifies Phil Harvey as the author, lists version 13.58 as available May 5, 2026, and directs users to the ExifTool forum for issue discussion.

Pros and cons

Pro: Wide format and camera-note coverage supports metadata work across diverse files and manufacturers.
Pro: Reading, writing, deletion and metadata transfer work through a free command-line tool, with Perl libraries and a C++ interface for application integration.
Pro: Original files are retained by default when metadata is written, giving users a recovery copy.
Con: Command-line workflows demand care with hostile or oddly named files because options may execute Perl code and names can be mistaken for options.
Con: Trusted-code handling is required for configuration files, and validation is limited mainly to extra JPEG and TIFF checks.
Con: The Windows and macOS packages omit files present in the full Perl distribution, which developers may need for API documentation and libraries.

Alternatives

For a desktop-first workflow, Photo Metadata Editors is a useful category to compare. Choose ExifCleaner instead if you want a free desktop app for macOS 12+, Windows 10+ or 64-bit Linux; choose Metadata Stripper if your task is stripping metadata from JPEG, PNG or WebP images in a native desktop app.

Photini is another free option for readers who prefer software under GPL-3.0-or-later. Photo Metadata Editor fits Windows users who want an MSI installer or portable ZIP. Exif Pilot offers a free Basic EXIF editor on Windows, while SetEXIFData is a paid alternative at 12.94 EUR per once, with a serial number initially valid for up to three activations across macOS, Windows and Linux.

GeoSetter is a free Windows-only option with no usage restrictions. PhotoME is another free Windows alternative.

Verdict

Choose ExifTool when metadata breadth, camera-specific notes, batch-oriented command-line work or an embeddable Perl/C++ path matter more than a guided interface. Its free distribution and extensive tag operations are compelling; look elsewhere if you need broad image validation or do not want to manage command-line and configuration security carefully.
