Overview

Express Burn is desktop software for making audio CDs, authoring video discs, and writing data to CD, DVD, or Blu-ray. It is best for people who need several disc formats or command-line automation in one tool. The free edition covers non-commercial CD burning; DVD and Blu-ray work means moving to a paid annual plan.

Key features

Audio projects can become MP3 or audio CDs, with support for WAV, MP3, WMA, OGG, and FLAC. This format range helps when source files vary, though the free edition still limits users to CDs.

For video, Express Burn supports DVD and Blu-ray burning, chapter management, and PAL or NTSC output. DVD authoring adds more than 20 menu templates and the option to add custom images. These controls make it more suitable for structured video discs than a basic data burner, but they are relevant only if a paid plan fits the project.

Data discs can use ISO/Joliet, UDF, or Hybrid formats. Express Burn can also create and burn ISO images, make bootable data discs, copy discs, and write to recordable or rewritable media, including dual-layer DVD and Blu-ray. Command-line operation gives repeatable tasks a route to automation and integration with other programs; occasional burners are unlikely to benefit from that capability.

NCH says the software must not be used to break copy-protected or region-protected media, and that its audio and video functions are intended for users' own content. NCH also says its programs may collect anonymous usage data, such as how often menus or options are used. It says its website encrypts personal information in transit with SSL and does not store credit card information.

Pricing

The freemium model gives casual users a lasting entry point, but the free plan is narrowly scoped: Express Burn Free costs 0.00 USD per free, does not expire, and burns CDs only for non-commercial use. It is a fit for personal CD jobs, not paid work or DVD and Blu-ray projects.

The annual plans expand disc support in steps. Express Burn Plus CD Burner Annual Plan costs 34.99 USD per year, billed Annual, and covers audio and data CD burning. Choose it if CDs are enough but the free edition's non-commercial restriction is not. Express Burn Plus CD + DVD Authoring Annual Plan costs 49.99 USD per year, billed Annual, and adds CD and DVD recording for users who need DVD projects. Express Burn Plus CD + DVD + Blu-ray Authoring Annual Plan costs 59.95 USD per year, billed Annual, and covers all supported disc types; it is the relevant tier for Blu-ray or the full format range. The pricing model includes a free trial, but its length is not established here.

Platforms

Express Burn runs on macOS and Windows, making it an option for desktop users on either platform. Linux users will need another choice.

Who it's for

Choose Express Burn if you need to author audio or video discs, manage data and ISO formats, or automate burning from the command line. It is less compelling for someone who only needs occasional non-commercial CD burning unless the free plan's restriction is acceptable. Users seeking a Linux option should look elsewhere.

Support includes troubleshooting and how-to articles, a forum, a help manual, and a technical-support contact option. NCH Software Pty Ltd says its development team has released more than 80 applications since 1993.

Pros and cons

Pros: Audio, video, data, ISO, and bootable-disc capabilities bring varied disc work into one application.
Pros: Command-line operation can serve repeatable or integrated workflows.
Cons: The free edition is non-commercial and CD-only, excluding DVD and Blu-ray projects.
Cons: DVD and Blu-ray users must choose an annual plan, with the broader disc range reserved for the highest tier.

Verdict

Express Burn is a sound fit for desktop users who need several disc types, authoring tools, or command-line automation in one package. Its main reason to choose it is that breadth, from audio formats and ISO images to DVD and Blu-ray authoring. Look elsewhere if you need a free commercial burner or Linux support; the free edition is personal-use CD-only, while broader disc work requires an annual plan.
