Overview

Family Locator brings live family location sharing and messaging together with safety alerts and SOS tools. It suits households coordinating children’s trips and check-ins, provided every member consents to sharing their location. The free option makes it accessible, but families who need extensive alerts or history should weigh the paid plans against the app’s battery warning and platform limits.

Key features

A shared map and instant messaging put whereabouts and communication in one place. Safe and unsafe zones notify family when a child enters or leaves an area; destination notifications and check-in sharing add useful updates for journeys. The SOS button immediately sends a child’s exact GPS location, a practical emergency feature when the child can use the app.

Lost-phone location may help recover a misplaced device. Premium adds automated SOS calls and augmented-reality finding, while In-flight mode uses FlightAware data to show a plane’s location and notify family about departure, landing, delays or cancellation. These are useful additions for families who want travel and safety tools in the same app, but they are not essential to ordinary location sharing.

Lifetime Premium includes GPS points and movement history from the past seven days; Premium subscription features include location history for all family members. The privacy policy says movement history is retained for two weeks. Location sharing requires mutual consent, and the terms prohibit unauthorized tracking or surveillance, so Family Locator is for willing coordination, not covert monitoring. The maker says it encrypts location-based data and uses secure transmission protocols. Its privacy policy names integrations and data sharing involving Google, Facebook, Google Places, Trax, Firebase, payment providers and analytics or advertising services, which privacy-conscious households may want to consider.

Pricing

The free plan is free and is described as offering complete functionality. That makes it a sensible starting point for families who want to try location sharing and core tools without a subscription. However, Premium specifically adds unlimited location alerts and location history for all family members, so households relying on frequent notifications or fuller shared records may find the paid tier more suitable.

Lifetime costs 14.99 USD per once, billed one-time, and includes premium features. It suits families who prefer a single payment to a recurring charge; its named history benefit covers GPS points and movement history from the past seven days. Monthly Premium Subscription costs 19.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes premium features. It may suit families who want premium access without a one-time payment, though continued use means recurring monthly charges. A free trial is available.

Platforms

Family Locator is offered on Android, iOS and macOS, while the maker says the app is currently supported only on Android and iOS. Readers choosing primarily for Mac use should treat that distinction as a limitation. The App Store warns that continued background GPS use can dramatically decrease battery life, a material trade-off for anyone expecting continuous location updates.

Who it's for

Family Locator is best for households that want consent-based location sharing, zone and journey alerts, messaging and an immediate child SOS location in one app. Its premium tier is a better fit when unlimited alerts, family-wide history, automated SOS calls, augmented-reality finding or in-flight notifications matter. It is not the right choice for unauthorized tracking, and the background GPS warning matters to anyone prioritizing battery life.

Verdict

Choose Family Locator if your household wants consent-based location sharing, useful zone and SOS alerts, and a free way to start. Its strongest case is the combination of everyday coordination and emergency tools, with a one-time premium purchase available. Look elsewhere if macOS support is essential, if continuous GPS would be too costly for battery life, or if your family needs location sharing without unanimous consent.
