Overview

Flat brings notation, playback, and real-time collaboration together on web, desktop, and mobile. Tablature and parts extraction broaden its use beyond standard score writing. It is a sensible choice for shared arrangements and classroom work, but less compelling for solo composers who do not need collaboration and want cloud sync without paying.

Key features

Multiple users can write, edit, and comment on the same score in real time from different devices. That makes Flat well suited to collaborative arranging and teaching. The free plan includes this feature, though its 15-score limit may be restrictive for users maintaining a larger library.

Flat supports MusicXML and MIDI import and export, as well as tablature and parts extraction. Desktop users can export scores to PDF, MP3, and WAV. PDF import requires Power or paid credits, so Flat is a less convenient fit when the workflow begins with existing PDF scores.

Basic includes 30 instruments; Power expands that to more than 180, including HQ studio instruments, and adds custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, and advanced playback. Offline composing, editing, and playback are supported, but cloud sync requires Power. That trade-off works for occasional offline sessions, not for users who expect their scores to sync across devices without a paid plan.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Flat Basic	Free	Core notation, playback, real-time collaboration, MIDI device transcription, 30 instruments, up to 15 scores, MusicXML and MIDI import, and export and printing with Flat branding.
Flat Power Monthly	$9.99 per month	Unlimited scores, 180+ instruments including HQ instruments, MusicXML and MIDI import and export, custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, advanced playback, cloud sync, and priority support.
Flat Power Yearly	$49.99 per year	Power features on an annual subscription; Flat states this saves 58% compared with monthly billing.
Flat Power Lifetime	Custom pricing	Lifetime option with premium Power features.
Flat Desktop Free	Free	Free desktop app with up to 15 scores.
Flat for Education	Free for one month to try	Education version with integrations for Google for Education, Microsoft Office 365, and Canvas.

Basic is adequate for smaller score collections and users willing to manage the 15-score ceiling. Power is the practical step up for an unlimited library, cloud sync, and its wider instrument set. The annual price is substantially lower than paying monthly across a year; the lifetime option is also available, at custom pricing. Flat accepts credit card and PayPal payments.

Platforms

Flat runs on the web, iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows, with both web-based and desktop use. The desktop app is free to download and use. Offline composing, editing, and playback are possible, while cloud sync is reserved for Power. A personal account requires users to be at least 13 in most countries.

Who it's for

Flat is a strong fit for musicians, arrangers, and educators who need to collaborate on notation across devices, especially when tablature, parts extraction, or classroom integrations matter. It is less suitable for users who need more than 15 scores but do not want a subscription, or who rely on PDF import without paying for Power or credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Real-time writing, editing, and comments support shared work across devices, including on the free plan.
Pros: MusicXML and MIDI import and export, plus desktop PDF, MP3, and WAV export, cover several common score workflows.
Pros: Web, mobile, and desktop availability, along with offline composition and playback, offer flexible access.
Cons: The free plan stops at 15 scores and includes 30 instruments, limiting larger libraries and instrument choice.
Cons: Cloud sync requires Power, and PDF import requires Power or paid credits.
Cons: Power's monthly subscription costs $9.99 per month; the lower annual price requires paying $49.99 upfront for the year.

Alternatives

For a wider choice of notation tools, browse Music notation software or Music Collaboration Software.

Fender Notion is worth considering if unlimited staves and full editing on a free plan matter more than Flat's collaboration and Power instrument set. Sibelius is another freemium notation option. MuseScore Studio is a free, open-source alternative with no limitations. Noteflight offers a web-based alternative, with Premium at $7.95 per month for unlimited scores. Dorico, LilyPond, ScoreCloud, and TuxGuitar are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose Flat if you want notation, playback, and live collaboration in one tool that works across web, desktop, and mobile. Its free plan is capable for a small score collection, while Power makes sense for unlimited scores, cloud sync, and broader instrument coverage. Look elsewhere if the 15-score cap is unacceptable but a subscription is not, or if PDF import is central to your work.
