Overview

The main generator draws on a library of more than 8,000 open-source icons, including Lucide, Font Awesome, and Material Design collections. You can adjust color, background, shape, gradient, padding, and size, then check the result in device mockups. That combination suits app icons and prototypes where a polished variation on existing artwork is enough. It is a less natural fit when the work calls for an original illustration rather than a customizable library icon.

MakeIcon runs in a browser without installation on Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices. The maker says standard icon designs are processed in the browser and are not uploaded, stored, or tracked. AI tools have different privacy terms: prompts go to Cloudflare Workers AI, and customized icons may be collected anonymously into the public library. Avoid those tools for concepts that must remain private.

Key features

Customization and previews: Controls for color, background, shape, gradient, padding, and size give users substantial room to adapt an icon. Real-time device mockups help assess the result before export.
Multiple export formats: The generator exports PNGs or a ZIP of platform sizes for iOS, Android, and web. MakeIcon also supports SVG and ICO export, app icon sets, and web manifests, making it useful beyond a single image file.
AI generators: Text prompts can produce icons and SVG graphics, downloadable as SVG or PNG. Normal use of the AI icon generator is free without signup, but fair-use rate limits mean it is not an unlimited production pipeline. Possible public-library collection is another reason to keep sensitive prompts out.
Liquid Glass Studio: This separate tool handles layered artwork with real-time WebGL2 effects, PNG export up to 4096px, and ZIPs with default, dark, and clear variants. It broadens the offering, though its separate workflow is distinct from the conventional icon maker.
Licensing: The icon collections use CC BY 4.0, SIL OFL 1.1, and MIT licenses. They are free for personal and commercial projects subject to applicable attribution and brand-logo rules, so users should check the relevant collection terms before shipping.

Pricing

MakeIcon has one stated plan: Free at 0.00 USD per free. It requires no signup and includes no watermark, with PNG or multi-platform ZIP export. With PNG, SVG, ICO, app icon set, and web manifest support, the free offer covers the core export needs without a paid tier to weigh against it. There is no free trial because the product is free to use.

AI icon generation is also free for normal use without signup, but fair-use rate limits apply. That qualification matters if you need repeated generation at scale; MakeIcon does not promise unlimited AI use.

Platforms

MakeIcon is listed for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. The maker describes it as browser-based and usable on mobile devices as well as desktop systems, so it does not require a platform-specific installation.

Who it's for

Mobile app developers, PWA creators, indie developers, designers, and people building prototypes are the clearest fit. The customizable open-source library and platform-sized exports serve conventional app icon work well, while mockup previews make iteration more practical. Choose another approach if you need bespoke illustration, private AI prompting, or dependable high-volume AI generation.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 8,000 icons and detailed styling controls make it possible to create a distinct app icon without drawing from scratch.
Pro: PNG, SVG, ICO, app-set, web-manifest, and platform ZIP support cover common delivery needs in a free, no-signup workflow.
Pro: Standard designs are processed in-browser, which the maker says avoids uploading, storing, or tracking them.
Con: AI prompts are sent to Cloudflare Workers AI, and generated icons may enter the public library, so AI work is not equivalent to the browser-based private workflow.
Con: AI rate limits make the free generator less compelling for sustained or high-volume creation.
Con: The main maker starts from existing icon collections, so it is not the best choice for artwork that must begin as a wholly original illustration.

Alternatives

For a focused favicon workflow, compare the Favicon Generators directory. Resizo Favicon Generator is another free option with no account, no watermark, and no daily quota, so it is worth considering when quota-free favicon generation matters. Static.app is a broader freemium choice: its free plan includes one website, 50MB storage, a free subdomain, SSL, QR codes, a Mac desktop app, and a 7-day trial, which suits readers who also need a small website rather than only icon assets.

Favicon Maker is a free alternative. Texterfly offers 136+ tools with no signup or limits, making it a better fit when a broad utility collection is more useful than a dedicated icon workflow. Favicon.io provides free favicon generation, conversion, and an emoji library. IconsCove has paid plans alongside 20 free signup credits with no card required, so it is an alternative for readers considering a credit-based service. App Icon & Manifest Generator is a free web app with no pricing or usage limits stated. Favicon.now is free and combines generators, converters, validators, a checker, downloads, datasets, and guides without an account.

Verdict

MakeIcon is a strong choice for developers and designers who want to customize open-source artwork, preview it, and export a complete app icon set without paying or signing up. Its most persuasive advantage is the breadth of styling and platform exports in a free browser workflow. Look elsewhere for wholly original illustration or private, unrestricted AI generation: prompts leave the browser, generated icons may be shared to the public library, and fair-use limits apply.
