Overview

Figma brings several stages of product work together: Figma Design supports designing and prototyping digital products, Dev Mode bridges design files and code, FigJam provides a collaborative whiteboard, and Figma Slides supports interactive presentations. Unlimited cloud storage and shareable links with view or edit controls help teams keep work accessible and decide who can change it.

Comments, feedback, and branching let colleagues contribute without changing the main file. Figma also imports Sketch, PNG, and JPG files, and offers templates, illustration tools, and brand kit capabilities. The company says 95% of Fortune 500 companies used Figma as of March 2025; that scale signals broad adoption, but does not by itself determine whether its team-oriented workflow suits an individual user.

Key features

Design, handoff, and prototyping

Figma Design gives teams a shared place to explore, revise, and prototype digital products. Dev Mode keeps development handoff in the same files, and can run in VS Code through an extension. That connection is useful when designers and developers need to coordinate around the same work; it is less relevant to someone seeking only a standalone drawing tool.

Figma Make turns written prompts or existing designs into working prototypes or apps. It can be accessed on mobile and can connect to Supabase and external tools for product documentation. These capabilities extend the workflow from design toward a prototype, though Starter’s monthly AI-credit ceiling may matter to frequent users.

Whiteboarding and presentations

FigJam covers brainstorming, meetings, and other collaborative work. Figma Slides adds co-created presentations with live prototypes, polls, and transitions, as well as PowerPoint import and export. Together they make Figma more useful to teams that want adjacent planning and presentation work in the same environment, rather than a design-only product.

Official integrations include Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Notion, Jira, Confluence, Zapier, Asana, Linear, Dropbox, Trello, and Productboard. Figma also provides support, Help center, and Status resources.

Pricing

Figma uses a freemium model. Starter is free and includes limited access to Figma products, unlimited drafts, UI kits and templates, and 150 AI credits per day, capped at 500 credits per month. It also allows unlimited viewers, but co-editing is limited to three files with no more than three pages each. That is a workable entry point for trying the workflow or keeping draft work, but an active team can quickly outgrow the shared-editing allowance.

Professional costs 16.00 USD per month when billed monthly, or 12.00 USD per month when billed annually. Both plan entries include unlimited files and projects, team libraries, and advanced prototyping. The annual option lowers the monthly price but commits the buyer to annual billing. Professional is the practical step up for teams that need broader file capacity and shared libraries.

Organization costs 55.00 USD per month, billed annually, and adds organization-wide design systems and centralized administration. Enterprise costs 90.00 USD per month, billed annually, and includes enterprise administration, advanced security, and controls. Enterprise is intended for businesses requiring enterprise-level security. Governance+ is an optional Enterprise-only add-on for advanced access, sharing, and compliance tools; its price is custom pricing.

Separate seats let teams pay according to collaborators’ roles. A Professional Collab seat costs 3.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and provides FigJam and Figma Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month. Professional Dev seats cost 12.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits. The Professional Full seat costs 16.00 USD per month, billed monthly; it includes unlimited files and projects, team-wide design libraries, advanced Dev Mode inspection and MCP Server, and 3,000 AI credits per month.

Organization Dev seats cost 25.00 USD per month, billed annually, while Enterprise Dev seats cost 35.00 USD per month, billed annually. Each includes Dev Mode, FigJam, Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month. Organization and Enterprise Collab seats each cost 5.00 USD per month, billed annually, and include FigJam and Slides, view/comment access, and 500 AI credits per month. Teams can buy additional AI credits through pay-as-you-go or subscriptions. Subscription payments are non-refundable. Eligible students and educators can get Professional team functionality free through Figma Education.

Platforms

Figma supports web, macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. Desktop applications are available for macOS and Windows, and mobile applications for iOS and Android. This broad device support suits teams that need to access work across computers and phones, while Figma Make specifically supports mobile use.

Who it's for

Figma is a strong choice for product teams that want design, prototyping, developer handoff, whiteboarding, and presentations connected in one workspace. Its role-based seats can accommodate viewers, collaborators, developers, and full design contributors at different price points. A solo user focused on illustration, or a team that needs only presentation software, may not benefit as much from that breadth.

For organizations with formal security and administration requirements, Enterprise offers advanced security and controls, and Governance+ adds more access, sharing, and compliance tools. Figma maintains SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 reports and says its services are certified against ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO/IEC 27018:2019, with its AI management system certified against ISO/IEC 42001:2023.

Pros and cons

Pros: Connected design, handoff, whiteboarding, and presentation tools reduce the need to split a product workflow across unrelated workspaces.
Pros: Unlimited cloud storage, shared links with access controls, and collaboration features support teams working across roles.
Pros: Role-specific seats let teams give collaborators and developers relevant tools without buying everyone a full seat.
Cons: Starter co-editing is capped at three files and three pages per file, limiting its usefulness for sustained team production.
Cons: The best monthly rate on Professional requires annual billing; Organization and Enterprise plans and several specialist seats are also billed annually.
Cons: Teams with heavy AI use may need to buy credits beyond the Starter allowance or seat-specific monthly allocations.

Alternatives

For a broader graphic design software shortlist, compare tools by the kind of work and platform you need. Canva is worth considering for a free, template-led design editor, while ibisPaint offers a free version across mobile and desktop platforms with unlimited usage time and advertisements. Clip Studio Paint is a paid alternative with a free trial for concept artists, illustrators, and designers.

Adobe Creative Cloud offers a free plan and trial, and may suit readers looking for a broader creative suite. Visme provides a free Basic plan with 500MB of storage and a 50-slide/page project limit, making it a possible fit for bounded presentation work. PosterMyWall has a free plan with design and email templates and publishing to one social media account. WPS Presentation and Microsoft PowerPoint are presentation alternatives for readers comparing slide-focused tools.

Verdict

Choose Figma if your product team needs designers, developers, and collaborators to work around shared design files, with whiteboards and presentations close at hand. Its strongest reason to buy is that connected workflow, supported by flexible seat types and broad platform coverage. Look elsewhere if you need a single-purpose illustration or presentation tool, or if Starter’s narrow co-editing limits are too restrictive and annual billing does not suit your team.
