Overview

Founded in Berlin in 2014, flowkey combines song practice with courses in music theory, chords, and sheet-music reading. That mix gives learners a way to alternate between working on repertoire and studying fundamentals, rather than relying on either lessons or songs alone.

Key features

The library contains thousands of songs across genres and skill levels, arranged by professional pianists. Wait Mode listens to a performance and pauses until the correct notes are played, which lets learners set their own pace through a piece. A compatible keyboard or piano can connect by USB MIDI or Bluetooth MIDI for more reliable note recognition.

Video with sheet music, reduced-speed playback, section looping, and separate right- and left-hand practice make it possible to focus on difficult passages instead of repeatedly starting from the beginning. Step-by-step courses cover theory, chords, and notation, while progress tracking helps learners follow their practice.

The free account includes only a few songs and course lessons, so it is a sampler rather than a full learning path. Premium unlocks pop, rock, jazz, film, TV, and video game music; Classic is limited to classical pieces and public-domain songs.

Pricing

The Free Account is free and remains available for as long as you want, but its few songs and lessons limit how far a learner can progress without upgrading.

Classic Monthly is 16.49 USD per month, and Classic Yearly is 99.99 USD per year. Both include all courses, classical music pieces, and public-domain songs for one individual. They suit learners content with that repertoire; choosing Classic means giving up Premium's broader popular-music catalog.

Premium Monthly is 24.99 USD per month for one user, while Premium Yearly is 149.99 USD per year, with the full 12 months paid upfront. Both add pop, rock, jazz, film, TV, and video game music to Classic content. The annual option costs less than paying the monthly rate for a full year, but commits the full amount upfront.

Family Monthly costs 37.49 USD per month and Family Yearly costs 224.99 USD per year. Both include Premium content for up to five user profiles, making them the relevant choice when several people need separate profiles; they cost more than individual subscriptions.

Yearly plans include a free 7-day Premium trial and convert to a yearly subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before expiry. A 14-day money-back guarantee also applies. Only Premium is sold through the App Store or Play Store; Classic and Family must be purchased through the web app. flowkey does not offer a lifetime plan.

Platforms

flowkey runs on Android, iOS, and the web. The app is therefore available across mobile and browser, but Classic and Family subscriptions require a web purchase rather than an in-app store subscription.

Who it's for

flowkey is a strong fit for solo piano learners who want song-led practice with tools for slowing down, looping, and separating hands, alongside lessons in notation and fundamentals. It is less compelling for someone who wants a substantial free catalog or whose preferred music falls outside the classical and public-domain selection in Classic.

Pros and cons

Pro: Thousands of songs across skill levels provide room to choose repertoire as ability develops.
Pro: Wait Mode and focused practice controls let learners work through notes and difficult sections at their own pace.
Pro: Courses cover theory, chords, and sheet music, complementing the song library.
Con: The free account offers only a few songs and lessons, so it is not a broad ongoing option.
Con: Pop, rock, jazz, and screen music require Premium, while Family plans cost more than individual access.
Con: The yearly trial renews into an annual subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before it ends.

Verdict

Choose flowkey if you want to learn piano through a broad range of songs while also working through structured courses and self-paced practice tools. Its main advantage is the connection between repertoire and focused practice; look elsewhere if the free tier must carry most of your learning or if you want popular genres without paying for Premium.
