In their own words
Flux
Flux is an open-source command-line package manager for JavaScript and Node.js projects, built by Gautam Suthar. It installs, updates, lists, and removes packages from the npm registry, and runs scripts defined in package.json. Packages are placed in node_modules, while downloaded tarballs remain in a shared per-user cache that later projects can reuse. Flux is available through a global npm installation or as a standalone binary without Node.js. The npm route requires Node 18 or later; the standalone binary includes no runtime. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, uses package.json, and has no workspace or lockfile support. The alpha handles direct dependencies only, without dependency-tree resolution, so installs are not reproducible. Flux has no telemetry, requires no account, and is MIT licensed for personal and commercial use. The maker recommends it for side projects and experiments, not production projects.
Pantry
Pantry is a package manager for system-level binaries and JavaScript/TypeScript packages, available on macOS, Linux, and Windows for ARM64 and x86_64 systems. Its catalog lists 1,753+ system packages, 3M+ npm packages, 469K+ PHP packages, 21 Zig packages, and 50 desktop apps. System packages are pre-built and delivered as tarballs through a CDN-backed registry. For JavaScript projects, Pantry acts as an npm client with access to the full npm registry, including workspace and monorepo support. The CLI is installed with a shell command, and the maker says it has no runtime dependencies. Pantry supports lockfiles, global installation, offline package caching, and publishing. The Free plan costs nothing and includes public packages, one seat, 50MB artifacts, standard builds and downloads, 30 days of full analytics, and a point-in-time audit. Pro costs $9 a month; Team costs $29 a month and includes 10 seats. Paid plans add private and unlisted packages, build insurance, continuous CVE and licence alerts, and SBOM export.
