Overview

Black Forest Labs, founded in 2024 and based in Freiburg, Germany, targets marketing, product visualization, creative production, design, entertainment, and e-commerce. FLUX brings image and video generation together with editing endpoints, a useful combination for teams managing more than one creative task. It is less compelling for someone who only wants a narrowly focused image generator.

Teams can work in a browser playground, use the API, or run downloadable weights on their own infrastructure. API usage includes full commercial rights without a separate license. Open-weight rights depend on the model: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B allows commercial use under Apache 2.0, while FLUX.2 [dev] is non-commercial and has no hosted API endpoint. Submitted prompts, uploads, tasks, and outputs may be used to train and improve models; an email opt-out route is provided. That policy deserves attention when handling client or confidential material.

Key features

Image and video workflows

FLUX.2 generates and edits images up to 4 MP, with multi-reference editing, hex color control, and text rendering. Those controls suit product and marketing work that needs reference matching, specific colors, or text in the image. The 4 MP maximum may constrain workflows requiring larger output.

FLUX 3 generates video with synchronized audio from text or images and can extend an existing clip, up to 20 seconds. That makes it relevant to short-form creative production, but the stated clip limit is not a fit for longer sequences. FLUX Tools add outpainting, object erasing, virtual try-on, video upscaling, and deblurring endpoints, broadening the toolkit beyond initial generation.

Access, support, and safeguards

The maker names Mistral, Magnific, Adobe, Microsoft, Picsart, Gamma, and OpenArt among its integrations. ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type II certifications may matter to organizations assessing security. A Help Desk serves users generally, with dedicated support for high-throughput enterprise workloads. Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits, which avoids charging for those unsuccessful requests.

Pricing

FLUX is freemium, with paid options from $0.01. API image pricing is usage-based: monthly-billed FLUX.2 options range from $0.01 per month for [klein] 4B to $0.07 per month for [max], each with a 4 MP output maximum. Additional megapixels and reference images are billed separately, at rates from $0.001/MP for [klein] 4B to $0.03/MP for [max]. [pro] is $0.03 per month, [klein] 9B $0.02 per month, and [flex] $0.05 per month; [flex] bills $0.05 per first and additional MP, including reference images.

For occasional use, pay-as-you-go [klein] 4B costs $0.01 per once, billed at $0.014 for the first MP and $0.001 per additional MP and reference-image MP. [klein] 9B is $0.02 per once, with $0.015 for the first MP and $0.002 per additional or reference-image MP. [pro] is $0.03 per once, with $0.03 for the first MP and $0.015 per additional or reference-image MP; [max] is $0.07 per once, with $0.07 for the first MP and $0.03 per additional or reference-image MP. These options round resolution up to a whole MP and cap output at 4 MP. Pay-as-you-go [flex] is $0.05 per once and $0.05 per MP, with no per-image minimum.

Self-hosted FLUX.2 [klein] 4B weights are free under Apache 2.0 and allow commercial use; [dev] weights are free for non-commercial use under the FLUX Non-Commercial license. The latter has no hosted API endpoint. Choose the paid API for its stated commercial rights, or the free weights when deployment control and the applicable license suit your use. Costs scale with output and reference-image megapixels, so frequent high-resolution generations can make the headline starting price misleading.

Platforms

FLUX supports API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows access, as well as self-hosted deployment. The range gives developers and teams a choice between a browser workflow, integration, and running weights on their own infrastructure.

Who it's for

FLUX is a strong candidate for creative and commercial teams that need image generation and editing, short video generation, or API and self-hosted deployment options. Its reference editing, color controls, text rendering, and specialized endpoints align with product visualization and marketing work. Solo users seeking predictable costs, longer video, or a single-purpose image tool may find the per-megapixel pricing and broad model family unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pros: Browser, API, and self-hosted access let teams choose how to use and deploy the models.
Pros: Image editing controls and specialized tools cover tasks from outpainting and erasing to virtual try-on and video cleanup.
Pros: API usage includes full commercial rights without a separate license, and failed or moderated generations do not consume credits.
Cons: Open-weight commercial rights vary by model; [dev] is non-commercial and lacks a hosted API endpoint.
Cons: The privacy policy permits submitted material to be used for model training and improvement unless users opt out by email.
Cons: Image output is capped at 4 MP, and megapixel-based charges can add up for larger or reference-heavy jobs.

Alternatives

For other options, browse AI Art Generators and AI image generators. Choose Deep Art Effects if you want an image-focused option with Android and iOS apps alongside desktop, web, and API access; its three-month subscription is 25.00 USD per month.

Scenario is worth considering for a web or API workflow with a free tier offering 50 daily credits for personal and evaluation use, or a Starter plan at 15.00 USD per month. starryai offers web, macOS, iOS, and Android access and a free allowance of 25 images daily. Vizcom may suit users focused on its design-oriented platform mix of macOS, web, and Windows; its free Starter plan includes 800 credits, standard render speeds, and community support.

Deep Dream Generator offers web-based free image generation and a Basic plan at 9.00 USD per month. Leonardo.Ai is an API-access alternative whose free tier includes 150 fast tokens per day and one personal collection. Playground AI has a free plan capped at up to 10 images every three hours, three monthly generations across selected models, and two downloads per day. Ideogram offers a 20.00 USD per month Plus plan with 1,000 monthly credits and eight running or queued generations.

Verdict

Choose FLUX if your creative workflow benefits from a broad image and video model family, specialized editing tools, and a choice of API, browser, or self-hosted access. Its strongest case is the combination of those capabilities with commercial API rights. Look elsewhere if 4 MP is too restrictive, per-megapixel charges do not suit your volume, or your privacy and licensing requirements rule out the relevant model and workflow.
