Overview

FreeEed extracts text and metadata from documents, uses OCR, and supports predictive coding. It is designed for large data volumes across data centers, multi-cloud environments, and local networks, with inputs including PST, MSG, and EML email, Office files, PDFs, images, ZIP archives, and other common eDiscovery formats. That breadth suits mixed evidence collections, though the free plan’s 1 GB ceiling rules it out for larger matters.

Production options include EDRM XML load files, Concordance DAT, and native file exports compatible with Relativity, Nuix, and other platforms. Local deployment keeps documents in the user's environment, and SSL encrypts data in transit. These are practical strengths for teams managing sensitive material or handing work into other review systems.

Key features

Search and OCR: Community Edition and Professional both include full-text search and OCR, making the free plan useful for a small collection that needs basic discovery rather than a full production workflow.
AI-assisted review: Professional adds AI Advisor, PII detection, and Matter Summary. Those tools make the paid tier the more relevant choice when teams need assistance beyond locating text, though the plan is priced per month rather than being a free extension of Community.
Matter workflow and export: Custodian management and production-ready export are Professional features. Their absence from Community means users can search and OCR within its cap, but cannot treat it as a complete production-ready workflow.
Deployment choices: Native Windows, Mac, and Linux installers are offered, as are a portable ZIP package and unstable daily builds that may contain bugs. The range supports different deployment preferences, but daily builds are a poor choice for dependable production use.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Community Edition	0.00 USD per free (billed $0 /forever)	Unlimited matters within 1 GB, full-text search, and OCR; no PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, or production-ready export.
FreeEed Professional	50.00 USD per month (billed $50 /mo)	OCR, full-text search, AI Advisor, PII Detection, Matter Summary, Custodian Management, and production-ready export; 30-day free trial.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Large-scale deployments, custom integrations, dedicated SLA-backed support, on-premise or cloud deployment, and security and compliance options.

Community is a sensible starting point for small-scale search and OCR, but its 1 GB limit and missing review and production tools make it a poor fit for sustained case work. Professional is the clearest step up for a team that needs those capabilities, at $50 per month with a 30-day trial. Enterprise is for organizations needing larger deployments, integrations, or dedicated support; its pricing is custom.

Platforms

FreeEed supports Windows, Mac, Linux, VirtualBox, and Amazon AWS cloud. Native installers are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with local deployment available for organizations that want documents to remain in their environment. This flexibility favors teams able to manage their own deployment; readers seeking a web-only service may prefer a hosted alternative.

Who it's for

FreeEed is best suited to legal review, eDiscovery, enterprise search, and forensic investigation teams that process varied document collections and value local deployment or production exports. Community fits modest workloads that can stay within 1 GB. Professional is more appropriate when AI-assisted review, PII detection, summaries, custodian management, or production-ready export are needed. Organizations requiring custom integrations, compliance options, or SLA-backed priority support should consider Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pro: Native installers for three desktop operating systems and local deployment give teams alternatives to sending documents to a hosted environment.
Pro: Exports in EDRM XML, Concordance DAT, and native formats compatible with established review platforms support downstream production workflows.
Pro: The free tier includes OCR and full-text search, so small collections can be worked without a subscription.
Con: Community is limited to 1 GB and omits PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, and production-ready export, restricting its usefulness for larger or end-to-end matters.
Con: Professional’s $50 monthly price is the entry point for the AI and production workflow features, so teams needing them cannot remain on the free edition.
Con: Unstable daily builds may contain bugs, making them unsuitable when reliability matters more than trying a recent build.

Alternatives

eDiscovery Software is a broader category guide for readers comparing tools across the field.

GoldFynch is worth considering for a web-based workflow with a free case capped at 512 MB stored and 1 GB processed, expiring after 90 days; its 3 GB case plan costs 27.00 USD per month.
Intella may suit a single user handling a defined ESI volume: its Intella 100 plan supports up to 100 GB and two viewers, while Intella Pro covers ESI over 250 GB with no case-size limit.
CloudNine is an option for readers seeking a volume-based subscription with web, Windows, or self-hosted platforms; its listed model starts at 17.50 USD per month with a six-month minimum commitment.
Lexbe eDiscovery Platform may fit teams that want usage-based hosting, volume-based billing choices, and unlimited users across web and mobile platforms.
RelativityOne is an alternative for organizations that want flexible pay-as-you-go or one- or three-year commitments, with AI capabilities included when committing to data volume.
Exterro eDiscovery is another paid web-based option, with pricing details available through a demo request.
iCONECT is another paid option.
Digital WarRoom may suit a hosted single-matter workflow: its listed plan costs 500.00 USD per month and includes one matter, unlimited users, 50 GB, and no processing fees.

Verdict

Choose FreeEed if your team needs document discovery with local deployment and export formats that can feed established review platforms. Community is useful for small collections, while Professional is the practical choice for AI-assisted review and production work. Look elsewhere if the 1 GB free cap or $50 monthly entry point does not fit your matter, or if you need a web-first workflow.
