Overview

FreeKiosk is an Android app for turning tablets into fullscreen kiosks for websites, web apps, or Android apps. It suits operators who want kiosk controls and basic signage without an app fee, especially teams connecting devices to Home Assistant. Its strongest case is the combination of lockdown, media playback, and optional fleet management; the main constraint is Android-only deployment, with a factory reset required for Device Owner setup.

Key features

Device Owner mode can hide system controls and prevent users from leaving the kiosk, a useful safeguard for public-facing or dedicated operational tablets. That protection comes with a deployment cost: setup requires ADB and a factory-reset device, so it is a poor choice when existing tablets must remain untouched or be configured with minimal preparation.

FreeKiosk combines video playback and image slideshows with URL Rotation & Planner, which cycles through web pages or schedules them by date and time. That makes it practical for displays that mix web content and media without relying on a single static page. The feature set is focused; it is best evaluated as an Android kiosk with signage tools rather than as a general-purpose signage platform.

Automation is a notable strength. More than 40 REST API endpoints and native MQTT with Home Assistant auto-discovery give technically inclined users two routes to control the app. The optional Cloud dashboard adds live device monitoring, remote commands, groups, configuration profiles, alerts, and screenshots, making centralized oversight more practical for fleets spread across locations.

The Android app is open source under the MIT license, but the Cloud platform source code is not published. The maker says the app has no analytics or crash-reporting SDK and stores settings on the device unless the user enrolls it in Cloud. Cloud data is hosted by OVH in France; the maker says it is not sold, rented, or shared for advertising. Cloud security measures include TOTP two-factor authentication, a unique SHA-256 hashed API key per device, and per-organization data isolation.

Pricing

The Android app is free. That is the straightforward choice for a single kiosk or an operator willing to manage devices locally. The FreeKiosk Cloud first-device plan is free, is billed forever, covers 1 device, and requires no card. It offers a no-cost way to try centralized management on one device, not a free multi-device fleet.

For larger deployments, Cloud costs 1.00 EUR per month per device for 1–99 devices, excl. VAT, with the first device free. Fleets of 100–499 devices pay 0.80 EUR per month per device for the whole fleet, excl. VAT, again with the first device free. The lower rate is tied to a larger fleet commitment; organizations should compare the per-device charge against the value of Cloud management for their actual scale. For 500+ devices, pricing is custom pricing, with the stated rate always below the 499-device rate.

The app has a free trial, but no trial length is given. The Cloud first-device plan is billed forever; no separate Cloud trial term is stated.

Platforms

FreeKiosk runs on Android 8.0 or later. Android is the supported device platform; the service also provides an API and a web-based Cloud dashboard. Its hybrid deployment suits teams that want Android kiosks with optional remote management, but it will not serve fleets that require kiosk clients for other operating systems.

Who it's for

FreeKiosk is a good fit for Android kiosk operators who value lockdown, scheduled web content, simple media signage, or Home Assistant automation. The maker positions Cloud for teams managing dozens or hundreds of kiosks across multiple locations, where monitoring and remote commands can reduce the need to handle each device locally. It is less suitable for a one-off deployment that cannot tolerate factory-reset setup, or for teams requiring a non-Android kiosk app or an open-source Cloud platform.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Android app is free and is MIT-licensed, keeping the app accessible and its source open.
Pros: Lockdown, video and image signage, and scheduled URL rotation cover several common kiosk and display needs in one app.
Pros: More than 40 REST API endpoints and MQTT auto-discovery support Home Assistant automation.
Pros: Cloud offers a free first device and per-device rates that fall for fleets of 100 or more.
Cons: Device Owner setup requires ADB and a factory reset, adding effort and disruption before deployment.
Cons: Android is the only supported kiosk platform, limiting its fit for mixed-device fleets.
Cons: The Cloud platform is not open source, despite the Android app's MIT license.
Cons: The free Cloud tier is limited to one device, so multi-device remote management is paid.

Alternatives

Kiosk is a free, open-source PDF reader that runs across a wider range of platforms, including self-hosted options; choose it when PDF reading, rather than Android kiosk lockdown and signage, is the priority. OpenKiosk is another free open-source choice for Linux, macOS, or Windows, making it worth considering when those desktop platforms matter more than Android.

KioskFrame is an iOS kiosk browser with a free core plan and a 4.99 USD per month paid plan; choose it for an iOS deployment. Kiosker supports Android and iOS and offers freemium plans, so it is an alternative when those platforms are the deciding factor. Hexnode Kiosk Browser is a paid option for Android, iOS, and Windows, with Pro at 2.20 USD per month and Enterprise at 3.20 USD per month; consider it when those additional platforms justify a paid plan.

KioWare is a paid alternative spanning Android, Linux, and Windows, while SiteKiosk is a paid option for Android, Windows, and web deployments. SureAsset is free and focuses on asset lifecycle management and hardware and software license tracking, rather than kiosk operation. For a broader category comparison, see Kiosk Browsers.

Verdict

Choose FreeKiosk if you need Android tablets locked to fullscreen content, want built-in signage and Home Assistant control, and can handle the Device Owner setup process. Its free app and optional, scalable Cloud management make it a compelling fit for Android-focused teams. Look elsewhere if you need another kiosk platform, an easier setup on devices already in service, or open-source remote management.
