Overview

Created by chemistry teacher Steven Sogo with help from students at Laguna Beach High School, the project has been led by Sogo since its 2019 founding. Its range—from bonding and molecular interactions to cellular respiration and reactions—makes it useful for supplementing instruction across several topics. It is less suited to anyone expecting a single, consistently finished virtual lab: the maker describes its experiments and prototypes as works in progress.

Interactive Chemistry combines virtual labs, molecular modeling, reaction simulations and equation tools in a mix of formats. That variety gives teachers several kinds of focused activities to choose from, though prototype status makes it prudent to check an activity before building a lesson around it. The collection sits among options in Chemistry Simulation Software.

Key features

The site favors topic-specific games and simulations over one unified laboratory environment. That approach can make an activity a direct fit for a particular lesson, but it means the experience may differ from project to project.

Concept practice: Activities cover ionic and covalent bonding, cellular respiration, chemical reactions and molecular interactions, giving instructors material across several areas of chemistry.
Reaction and equation work: The Double Replacement Reaction Simulator supports laptops, Chromebooks and mobile devices. Matchmaker gives immediate feedback when students form correct products and offers practice balancing equations, making it useful for targeted reaction work.
Classroom guidance: Matchmaker links to suggested lessons and an instructional video. These materials can help teachers place the game within a lesson rather than use it as a standalone exercise.
Mobile activities: Cell Model 2025 is playable on iPads, Android tablets and most phones. This offers flexibility for classes with varied devices, while the simulator’s broader device support covers common classroom computers too.
Community and code: Users can report bugs or suggest features through linked forms, and the site provides an email contact at lbhsic2020@gmail.com. The maker also says prototype code is on GitHub for people who want to finish projects themselves; that is a route for technically inclined users, not a substitute for polished support.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. The plan includes free web-based games and simulations, with no paid tier or seat, quota, or renewal terms described. It is the clear fit for teachers and learners who need no-cost chemistry practice. The trade-off is maturity: the maker’s warning about unfinished projects and possible bugs matters if an activity is central to a graded lesson or must work reliably.

Platforms

Interactive Chemistry supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Individual activities have more specific compatibility: Cell Model 2025 works on iPads, Android tablets and most phones, while the Double Replacement Reaction Simulator runs on laptops, Chromebooks and mobile devices. This makes the collection a reasonable option for mixed-device classrooms, though support can vary by activity.

Who it's for

Teachers seeking free, focused exercises for chemistry topics from middle school through university are the best match, especially when they want immediate feedback or equation-balancing practice. Students can use the games for concept reinforcement. Schools that need a uniform, dependable virtual-lab curriculum should look elsewhere or verify each project first, given the maker’s prototype warning.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free web-based games and simulations cover multiple chemistry topics, removing a software fee for classroom practice.
Pro: Matchmaker combines immediate product feedback with equation-balancing practice and links to lesson materials.
Pro: Support for common desktop and mobile platforms, with named activities designed for phones and tablets, helps accommodate varied devices.
Con: The maker says experiments and prototypes may be unfinished and buggy, so reliability is a concern for activities that must work without interruption.
Con: The collection is made up of distinct projects rather than one uniform lab, so teachers may need to assess each activity’s fit and readiness.

Alternatives

Beyond Labz is worth considering when instructors want free access to teach, preview and build assignments, or when a one-time Chemistry purchase fits better than a fully free collection.

Collisions Higher Education is a closer alternative for US-based college and university educators: instructor access is free, while students have a 15.00 USD per year subscription.

PhET Interactive Simulations may suit readers who prioritize open-source simulations that are free to students and teachers online or as downloads.

ChemLab is a paid option with a free trial for readers considering a different simulation product.

PraxiLabs offers a free month with three simulations, basic real-time guidance and English and Arabic interfaces; it may suit someone who wants a bounded trial before a paid monthly plan.

VR Chemistry Lab is an alternative with a free demo for one device and a Windows or self-hosted platform listing.

ChemCollective Virtual Lab is free to install, use and distribute, making it another no-cost choice for educators and students.

Vic’s Science Studio offers a 14-day trial with full platform access, ready-to-use tasks, LMS tools and support for readers who want a time-limited evaluation.

Verdict

Choose Interactive Chemistry for free, focused games that reinforce particular chemistry concepts across classroom devices. Its strongest case is the combination of topic coverage and practical reaction feedback without a software charge. Look elsewhere if unfinished prototypes and possible bugs are unacceptable for the lessons or labs you need to rely on.
