In their own words
Game Developer Studio
Game Developer Studio combines a library of hand-drawn 2D game assets with GDS Editor, a browser-based tool for editing, compositing, and creating assets. Its store lists 1,292 packs, including characters, animals, weapons, backgrounds, tilesets, effects, vehicles, and interface elements. The assets include source files and use a royalty-free license. The standard license allows personal and commercial derivative projects without attribution, but does not allow standalone redistribution. GDS Editor Core costs nothing and runs in a desktop browser without installation, login, or server-side processing. It imports GDS, SVG, PNG, JPEG, and JPG files, and includes lossless scaling, color and outline adjustments, spritesheet playback, a personal asset stash, and several slicing tools. The texture panel and library are limited to GDS Plus supporters; the Supporter Club is temporarily closed while it is restructured. The maker says its art is made by hand, not AI-generated. The editor works on most browsers, though recent Brave versions may conflict.
Kenney Assets
Kenney Assets is a downloadable library of game-development materials, including 2D sprites, 3D models, UI elements, audio, fonts, pixel art, and textures. Individual packs are free to download, while the Kenney Game Assets All-in-1 bundle is a one-time purchase at a minimum price of 19.95 USD. The bundle lists more than 60,000 assets, including over 1,200 sound effects and music loops, plus bitmap and vector fonts. Asset packs use a CC0 public-domain license, which permits commercial projects without requiring attribution. Listed formats include PNG, SVG, OBJ, FBX, GLTF, and OGG, described as compatible with all game engines. An optional launcher for Windows and Linux includes tools for tile extraction and combination, converting files and images, PNG compression, audio processing, and store-thumbnail creation. New packs are added frequently, and updates are free for existing bundle owners. Kenney does not support importing assets into specific game engines, directing users instead to its knowledge base or the engine's documentation and community.
