In their own words
GetSpot
GetSpot is a free Android and iOS app for organizing recurring sports meetups with limited capacity and a fee. Organizers can create groups, share join codes, manage members and schedule events with a date, time, location, capacity and fee. When an event is posted, members can be notified. Once places fill, additional registrations go onto a waitlist, and the next person is promoted automatically when a confirmed place opens. Organizers collect payments offline using methods such as cash, Venmo or Zelle, then credit group wallets; registration fees are deducted from those balances. Withdrawing before the commitment deadline returns the fee to a member’s wallet. After the deadline, the fee is forfeited unless someone on the waitlist takes the spot. Organizers can approve join requests, add or remove members, credit wallets and send announcements. Players receive push notifications about events, registration changes and reminders. Users sign in with Google or Apple. GetSpot says real payment details do not pass through its servers because payments happen offline.
Indico
Indico is a free, open-source tool for organizing events, archiving materials, and supporting collaboration. It provides workflows for seminars, meetings, workshops, and conferences, and can bring an institute’s events together. For conferences, organizers can handle registration and abstract submission, store papers and other materials, and provide participant badges. Events use hierarchical categories, protections for resources, and roles within events. The room-booking module supports delegated management, booking approvals, and audiovisual equipment management. Indico integrates with Zoom so participants can join video conferences with a single click; listed plugins also cover PayPal payments and Amazon S3 event-file storage. It can be customized through configuration and plugins, and its HTTP Export API exposes category contents, events, rooms, and bookings. Indico is installed as a self-hosted instance. The project began in 2002, and CERN adopted it for event management in 2004 and has financed its development since. The maker describes room booking as suited to companies, research institutes, and universities.
