In their own words
GGIFF
GGIFF is a web-based GIF editor and converter available free of charge. It accepts video, GIF, and image-series inputs, including MP4, MOV, WebM, PNG, JPG, and WebP, and can also use a pasted image or hosted media URL. Video can be trimmed, assigned an extraction frame rate, and decoded into the editor. Editing tools cover resizing, optimization, frame changes, cropping, zooming, panning, and animated crop keyframes. Background options include AI removal, chroma key, black or white removal, and replacement. Effects provide color and brightness controls, blur, sharpening, artistic treatments, distortions, and animation or frame effects. Text, image, and GIF overlays can be added, and paint layers support drawing. Exports include GIF, PNG or JPG frames, and browser-supported video; WebM is best supported and MP4 requires Chrome. Settings can be saved in .ggiff files. Twitch and 7TV presets impose stated size, dimension, aspect-ratio, and frame limits. Cross-origin videos must be downloaded first.
Gifski
Gifski is a GIF encoder that turns video clips into smooth animations. It uses pngquant palettes and temporal dithering to produce frames with thousands of colors, alongside lossy LZW compression, temporal smoothing, and denoising. Users can resize animations and adjust compression to fit upload size limits. Quality is prioritized over small output by default; reducing dimensions, frame rate, or quality can make GIFs smaller. The site links to a free Windows graphical app and a macOS app, while command-line binaries are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The command-line workflow converts video through PNG frames, so ffmpeg may be needed to extract them. The macOS app includes trimming, cropping, dimension and speed controls, preview, looping and bounce options, and sharing integrations. It converts video rather than creating GIFs from added text or other elements, and it does not support QuickTime Animation. The library is open source for free software use; closed-source apps or services require a commercial license.
