In their own words
Gifski
Gifski is a GIF encoder that turns video clips into smooth animations. It uses pngquant palettes and temporal dithering to produce frames with thousands of colors, alongside lossy LZW compression, temporal smoothing, and denoising. Users can resize animations and adjust compression to fit upload size limits. Quality is prioritized over small output by default; reducing dimensions, frame rate, or quality can make GIFs smaller. The site links to a free Windows graphical app and a macOS app, while command-line binaries are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The command-line workflow converts video through PNG frames, so ffmpeg may be needed to extract them. The macOS app includes trimming, cropping, dimension and speed controls, preview, looping and bounce options, and sharing integrations. It converts video rather than creating GIFs from added text or other elements, and it does not support QuickTime Animation. The library is open source for free software use; closed-source apps or services require a commercial license.
GIPHY Create
GIPHY Create is a free GIF maker for turning images and videos into GIFs. It accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV, and WebM files, and can also bring in media through URLs from GIPHY, YouTube, Vimeo, and other sources. Users can add captions and stickers, apply filters, edit layers, and crop their creations; the sticker tool accepts JPG and PNG images. Desktop source videos must be under 100 MB and shorter than 15 seconds, and finished GIFs can be up to 15 seconds long. The desktop maker requires users to sign in to a GIPHY account. During creation, a GIF can be set to private, visible only to its creator while logged in and not shareable. GIPHY says creations can also be shared through social platforms, text message, and email. The mobile GIFMaker app can record GIFs and offers captions, effects, stickers, and trimming. GIPHY also provides an API and SDK for integrating its content into apps.
